Here's a phrase that I've heard multiple times today, that has me scratching my head

"Today, I am proud to be an American"

Chat Icon

Aren't we supposed to be proud to be an American EVERY day, despite the leadership?

Does this mean that if McCain had won -the Obama supporters would not be proud to be an American?

I voted for Obama, but I'm proud to be an American every day. The leadership shouldn't matter.

I think it's just because with this being such a historic event, it brings to light what an amazing Country we live in. Regardless of how you voted (I voted McCain), you can't help but be moved.

I guess my point is, people should be proud for the sake of being proud

Not because their candidate won

yes, like I said, I am proud every day

I am MORE proud that my "man" got elected but either way, I am proud that we live in a country where we can vote, I am proud that I am alive to see the first African American president.

i'll go with that - and I understand that

I just think it's getting a tad carried away

If McCain had gotten in, we still would have made history as well.

I agree totally . While it is historic that the first African Amerian President has been elected,I feel that we should always be proud to be Americans no matter who got voted in to office.

I agree with what you are saying...and I have not used the phrase this election...I am always proud to be an American.

But I will say...for a while I was worried about the future I promised my son. I was concerned as an American. But last night I can 100% say that as I held him in my arms and showed him how to pull the levers in the voting booth I was proud that we had that moment. Proud that for his first election he saw history being made...an African American as a presidential candidate and a woman as vice presidential candiate.

I was reminded yesterday, and will admit that I needed that reminder, that this is the land of hope, dreams and possibilities.

So while I am always proud to be an American....yesterday was a true reminder of why I am proud.

I am always proud to be an American, but I become especially proud during elections. I think our voting process is amazing and the fact that we can turn over power every 4 or 8 years without violence is remarkable.

Okay...here we go - this is NOT going to be a popular post! Chat Icon

I'm sure everyone knows by now, but my husband is British and we're currently living in the UK. The Brits totally look down on what they call "flag waving" and basically overt displays of nationalism. We've had many an argument about this and I recently asked him Well, aren't you proud of your country? His response - no, not really. Chat Icon He said he's not proud of all of the horrible things that have happened in his country's history (among them the Revolutionary war! Chat Icon )

His comment really got me thinking - am I always proud of my country? Well, no I'm not always proud of the way it acts and the things that it's done. I'm proud of the ideals that it was founded upon, I'm proud of what it promises. But I'm not proud when it doesn't deliver on those promises or acts in complete dissent of those original ideals. Don't get me wrong, I'm DEFINITELY not claiming I'm Canadian or faking a British accent, but I do think there are times when a bit of criticism is warranted and blind pride is, well, ignorant.

I recently became a British citizen and was completely surprised to my own reaction to the mandatory ceremony I had to attend. I was thinking - my life's good now. It was in America, it is in the UK - we've got all your basic freedoms, enough money to live comfortably, yadda yadda yadda. And then I looked around the room. There were so many people there of different backgrounds, nationalities, colors and circumstances and it really hit me that this meant SO MUCH to some of these people. That they had come from places where they didn't have what I had and they were immigrating to the US and the UK just for the OPPORTUNITY to have it. It was truly humbling moment.

So when I woke up this morning, I was incredibly proud of my country because it recognized that there was something that needed to be done and it went out and did it. People all around the world are saying things like "Americans can still make anything happen" - THAT's what really makes me proud! Chat Icon

Same. But what really irks me are all my Facebook "friends" who kept posting about how they're going to move to Canada, etc. if McCain won. I kind of wish they would move there anyway...you may not support a president, but you should always support your country!

Great point! It's immaturity that brings about these statements. People who truly are uneducated in the policies and what it will do to their lives. Fear of the unknown. I am realizing that people are much more stuck in the past than they are willing to admit. For all the progressive people I know claim to be, they're really not.

Re: Here's a phrase that I've heard multiple times today, that has me scratching my head

I never have not been proud to be an American, but there were some things that made me Chat Icon .

I also live overseas (Australia) and it seems like anything that was done wrong, I heard about it, including from my in-laws, but that is another topic in itself. It was really frustrating and almost made me think, why can't America get it right? But I was/am always proud and while I would just walk away it would still make me rather upset. The last straw was when I was harassed on a train for being American. I was very upset, but I still was proud.

I am especially proud today! For the first time I am hearing that my friends in Australia are proud of America! That makes me feel good and proud.

I guess I'm proud that the electoral process worked this time - the last two presidential elections had some questionable returns in key states that prevented a clear winner from emerging. This time Obama was the clear winner and I didn't hear about any unfair voting procedures.

(were there any?)

I'm proud to be an American everyday.

I always knew there would be an African American president someday.

I would be more proud if all the people who came out to vote for Obama came out to vote in EVERY election. JMHO.
