Dr Browns Bottles & Powdered Formula
Those that have Dr browns bottles...
Can you mix powdered formula in the bottle with the vent thingy?
Can you mix it without the vent in it, then put it in after the formula is mixed?
Amelia will only take the standard bottles-no wide necks- and the Ventaire standard nips are SOOOOoooo slow, it takes her forever to finish a bottle and she works so hard on it.
I am down to 2 kinds of bottles-Stick with Ventaires or try Dr Browns...
Thanks for the feedback!

You can't mix it with that thing in it. I mix it first in the bottle with the cap on and then add the vent thing and nipple.

Re: Dr Browns Bottles & Powdered Formula
I use Dr. Browns and put water in first then the powder, shake it a little, heat it up, put the vent thingy in with the nipple and shake more to get it to mix well. Occasionally there are little clumps of formula so I give it a good shake again. Waaalaaaa!

I used to mix powder in the standard bottles with all the pieces in it...and I put the travel cover on to shake it up, then let it sit to settle the bubbles.
Another option for you would be to mix up a larger batch of formula in a pitcher, then pour it into the bottle.

Re: Dr Browns Bottles & Powdered Formula
Can you put all the pieces right in the dishwasher? I am not kean on handwashing them.
These are my last choice, only because of all the pieces, but I am running out of options with bottles!! Dr. Browns are my last hope right now, I've heard such good things about them! My poor baby!
I am glad you can mix right in the bottle without issues, I like to make bottles on demand at room temp

I wash all the pieces in the dishwasher. Sometimes they may need an extra rinse in the sink especially the tubes.

oh totally! I always threw everything in the dishwasher (mine is kind of s*cky) so I would check the pieces after a wash.

Yes, right in the dishwasher:) Make sure it is top rack though (not sure why but everything says to so I do!!). I got one of these kings of things to hold all the pieces. Also, the "straw" thing in Dr. Browns fit right on the stick things in our dishwasher.

Another question...How's the nipple flow? What do you guys use for newborns/infants?

Same for us, can mix it with all the pieces in but the pitcher made it a lot easier!
We washed everything in dishwasher...have the basket that holds the vent things upright but never do it that way, we just throw that stuff in the big part of the basket. But I think I bought the basket at Target, not BRU.
We use Enfamil AR formula so we started with level 1 nipples but had to quickly go to level 2s at about 6 weeks (it was clumping in the nipple since its so thick) and then to level 3s at around 6 months.

Re: Dr Browns Bottles & Powdered Formula
Yes, BBB, BRU, Target, Walmart, etc. Pretty much everywhere! I like the ones at Target (they have their own brand) too.
As far as nipple size, I JUST switched DS to size 2 and he is 10 1/2 months. I was BF (and FF) until he was 9 months old so I didn't want him to get frustrated that the flow was slower while BF than with FF. It really depends on your child though.

Re: Dr Browns Bottles & Powdered Formula
I LOVE Dr Brown Bottles! We originally had the playtex drop ins, but DD was too gassy - these make a world of difference.
I'm BF and give DD 2 bottles a day. Shes's 3 months old and we just switched to the 2nd nipple - she eats more and last night she slept for 8 straight hours.

Re: Dr Browns Bottles & Powdered Formula
Did anyone have these bottles leak in your diaper bag?
Some of the reviews on BRU's website said that they leaked when they were out and about or if tipped.

Re: Dr Browns Bottles & Powdered Formula
I have used the size 2 nipple in the standard VentAires since birth, you are right that those size 1's are so freaking slow.

Re: Dr Browns Bottles & Powdered Formula
As far as leaking is concerned, strangly enough, I find that if you don't over tighten them, they leak less. One of those strange phenomenons like a baby sleeping more will sleep more

Re: Dr Browns Bottles & Powdered Formula
I dont shake it, I either make a pitcher full and measure bottles out as needed or ahead of time....
Or I use a handheld mixer ( $2.99 at BRU) to mix it up. ( although the more I think about it, the more I think the mixer might make bubbles that shaking would create as well so who knows) ...
I found the nipple flow to be pretty good...kinda like the playtex drop ins and equal to advent size 2's in my opinion.
DS had an issue with wanting a fast flow since birth and we havent had any issues.

I use to do it this way (in a separate bottle, I found the DB bottles leak without the insert)but I found that you actually can do it with the insert in there, just shake really really good. I have never had a clog as a result of doing it this way.

Re: Dr Browns Bottles & Powdered Formula
Invest in a few packs of mixing/travel caps. I used to travel with water in the bottles, a formula dispenser(greatest invention ever). When it came time to make a bottle would add the formula, shake it up(with only the mixing caps on the bottle) and then add the guts to it after it was mixed. No problem with leaks or lumps
