Drinking while breastfeeding...

For those who plan on BFing, and would like to enjoy an occassional drink... does anyone know how to go around it? Obviously, you'll have to pump the liquor out, and dispose of the milk, BUT, how do you know when it's completely out? Should I be posting this on Parenting?

I have been reading several books and you can have a drink. You just have to use moderation. I read you should BF or pump before drinking and you should wait 2 hrs after having a drink to BF again. Do not pump and discard. I heard that is a big waste and doesn't get it out of you system.

Re: Drinking while breastfeeding...

you BF an half hour to an hour before and "pump and dump" after you drink. It takes an hour to get out of your system so have frozen breastmilk handy for the next feeding.

LOL...I asked this in my breastfeeding class. I can't wait to have a glass of wine! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Same goes for sushi too because of the possibility of hepatitis B. However, if it is a clean sushi place the Breast milk should be fine to use. This is some of what I learned in my BF class. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

That makes sense. I have an idea....
After I have the baby I will ask the LC in the hospital what she thinks and report back.

You are a stronger woman than I am. My Dh has a bottle of Pinot ready to go to bring to the hospital and my SIL is on sushi patrol. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Guidelines

Current research says that occasional use of alcohol (1-2 drinks) is not harmful to the nursing baby. The American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Drugs classifies alcohol (ethanol) as a “Maternal Medication Usually Compatible With Breastfeeding.”

Many experts recommend against drinking more than 1-2 drinks per week.

It is recommended that nursing moms avoid breastfeeding during and for 2-3 hours after drinking (Hale 2002).

There is no need to pump & dump milk after drinking alcohol, other than for mom's comfort -- pumping & dumping does not speed the elimination of alcohol from the milk.

Alcohol does not increase milk production, and has been shown to inhibit let-down and decrease milk production (see below).
I
f you're away from your baby, try to pump as often as baby usually nurses (this is to maintain milk supply, not because of the alcohol). At the very least, pump or hand express whenever you feel uncomfortably full - this will help you to avoid plugged ducts and mastitis.

In general, if you are sober enough to drive, you are sober enough to breastfeed. Less than 2% of the alcohol consumed by the mother reaches her blood and milk. Alcohol peaks in mom's blood and milk approximately 1/2-1 hour after drinking (but there is considerable variation from person to person, depending upon how much food was eaten in the same time period, mom's body weight and percentage of body fat, etc.). Alcohol does not accumulate in breastmilk, but leaves the milk as it leaves the blood; so when your blood alcohol levels are back down, so are your milk alcohol levels.

Always keep in mind the baby's age when considering the effect of alcohol. A newborn has a very immature liver, so minute amounts of alcohol would be more of a burden. Up until around 3 months of age, infants detoxify alcohol at around half the rate of an adult. An older baby or toddler can metabolize the alcohol more quickly.

Re: Drinking while breastfeeding...

Drinking in moderation is fine...

Actually a nice beer will help your milk supply!

Re: Drinking while breastfeeding...

My plan is to pump, then drink 1 or 2 drinks - then pump again and toss that milk.

My friend never threw her milk out after drinking (which I dont think is good for the baby) and the baby always refused to drink it.
