Driving 3 hours with an 8 week old
We are invited to a wedding 3 hours away and I have been putting off rsvping since we have a newborn. He will be 8 weeks the weekend of the wedding - we would bring him and have a family member watch him.
Is driving 3 hours with an 8 week old a ridiculous idea?

I don't think so...when DD was 10 weeks old, I took her on a 12 hour road trip. It was easier then, than it is now, at 6yo.

Not ridiculous at all. It's much easier to do road trips when they're tiny and sleep a lot than when they're older and want to move and play. When DD was 6 weeks she would sleep the whole 2.5-3 hour drive upstate. Now that she's two, it's much more hit or miss whether the whole drive will be completely miserable!

i think it depends on the baby. i had a dd who was colic and was screaming her head off at 8 weeks. not the ideal driving situation.

Re: Driving 3 hours with an 8 week old
Agreed. We drove 5 hours with a 7 week old. It was a bit challenging when she was hungry, but other than that she just slept.
As someone who travels a lot with DD, I find these things make traveling most pleasant:
1. leave when DC is tired and full. 2. Have a few places in mind where you can stop along the way should your LO wake up. As much as I hate stopping on a long car ride a 4-5 hour drive with a nice break in the middle is way better than getting there in 3 hours but having to feed in the back of parking lots or side of the road when the baby starts crying. 3. If the arrival time is time sensitive leave lots of extra time for a pit stop, but also for a stop close to your destination to change diaper and feed baby to make sure he is comfortable. This way when you get to your destination you don't have to run to care for him.
Have fun!

Re: Driving 3 hours with an 8 week old
My daughter has slept in the car maybe 5 times her whole life. She was not a sleepy newborn. For me it would be a huge no.

Driving 3 hours with an 8 week old
My DD is great in the car so for us it would be fine. I try to plan trips around feedings. I usually get everything ready to go the night before and plan to leave shortly after nursing. I try to leave lots of extra time.

Re: Driving 3 hours with an 8 week old
We have traveled that distance with my DS and he slept the whole time. I'd just make sure he's well fed with a clean diaper, and then head right to the car! (I'd also stay overnight at a hotel so it's not so much traveling for one day.....l but I'd do that with or without a baby)

Re: Driving 3 hours with an 8 week old
We had the same situation, but our baby was 7 weeks & the wedding was 8 hours away.
We broke up the drive, headed out early & went. It was a wonderful wedding, we stayed for 2 nights & had a blast.
However, DD was horrible on a 3 hour drive to Newport at the same age.
You have to just try. At the worst, it's only 3 hours.

We drove 12 hours with a 5 weeks old. It was super easy compared to when he was 1 1/2. This is the easy time I feel to take them and do what you need to with them.

This
DS was a very colic baby and nothing kept him quiet except holding him. Hence why I rarely left the house longer than necessary with him.

I agree with this. First two DCs were excellent travelers but the third one cried a lot on road trips. I made trips upstate and then onto central MA and back to LI alone with oldest DC at 8wks and then upstate and east to Rochester when oldest was almost 2yrs and middle baby was less than 8 weeks old (for a funeral).

DS and DD sleep in the car, so it would have been fine for us - probably one of the easiest ages to go for a long drive! THe only annoying thing would be working around their feeding schedule, you would probably have to stop once.

Driving 3 hours with an 8 week old
Thanks everyone!
At five weeks, he's good in the car. He is EBF so I figured I would make sure I had several bottles pumped for the drive as well as for when my sister's SIL would be watching him. As of right now, he can go anywhere from 2.5-4 hours between feedings.

Yep this. We couldn't even be in the car 3 MINUTES with her much less 3 hours. No way would I be schleping 3 hours with a colic newborn to a wedding. But if your baby is like most that I hear of and "all they do is sleep at that age" I might feel differently.
