Driving to Florida

Ladies and Gents -

Anyone drive straight through to South Florida - how long is the drive and how horrible?
The rates are so beyond psychotic for Feb and April that we may rent a car and drive (so we don't put the mileage on our cars)

My uncle used to do it in about 20 hours but when my mom drove with all the kids, it took almost 2 days (we usually stopped at hotel for the night though)

Thanks. That's what we're thinking - about 20 hrs - I normally wouldn't mind taking it slow and spending a night somewhere - but rental car companies tack on a very large surcharge (3x the price of the rental to begin with) when you keep it for two days!

Re: Driving to Florida

We did it last december. It was just DH and I and it only took us 17 1/2 hours to get to west palm beach!!! We drove straight through and took my mom's volvo so we only had to stop twice for gas (every 6 hours)!

It's really not that bad... but DH and I both actually LIKE driving. We got up at 2am and DH did the first 6 hours while I slept. Then i drove the next 6 while DH slept... and DH drove the last leg. The way home we did the same thing.

Re: Driving to Florida

We drove to Atlanta from NY a total of 4 times (x2 = 8 times) in less than 3 months. It's about 980 miles each way and we averaged 13 hours. Add 6-8 hours for Florida. If you plan accordingly and drive with food and drinks in the car only stopping to gas up (and pee at the same time) and to sleep once, you'll make it with no problem!!

ETA: I see you don't plan on stopping to sleep.

I don't drive, only DH does, and I stay up with him navigating. But if 2 people do the driving, it should be no problem at all and well under 20 hours.

Wow you people drive fast! Chat Icon

I've done the drive a few times and the fastest I ever made it was 13 hrs to Jacksonville (DH was driving) and then another 4 approx. to get to Tampa. So that's 17... then it's another 4 to Miami from there.

Straight through to Miami though, the fastest I've ever made it to Miami was 23 - 24 hrs.

Re: Driving to Florida

My friend used to drive home to FL when we were in college at the end of each semester.

They would have to air the car out once they got to Naples Chat Icon

Ohhh.. thats great to hear that it only took 17 1/2 hours. We plan on doing the switch up thing at the 6 hour mark too and we want to leave about 2 am. we are going about 40 minutes north of west palm beach. good to know, thanks :)

We've done it and will totally do it again. I love road trips and it really went faster than expected. We made it in less than 20 hrs. don't remember the exact # though. We were going to go 1/2 way then sleep at a hotel but ended up just going straight through. We had no problems except on the way back we got slammed in traffic in So. Carolina I think.

Sounds perfect, it won't be that bad!
We would definitely do it again, we might be in May for DH's brother's wedding. Plus I HATE flying so driving is so worth it... no anxiety. Chat Icon

Thanks for all the responses, ladies!

I didn't even think they still made radar detectors!!!Chat Icon

I would love to do a 2-3 am departure but it doesn't work with renting a car - Budget for example (who we've rented from before and like) - you need to pick up car at JFK - not open at 2 am.

My car is a 10 yr old Honda Civic and could make the drive - but too small for DH to be in for so many hours.

He has a 5 yr old Explorer and we just don't want to put the miles on it yet - plus it eats gas!Chat Icon

Our thoughts were to drive down and fly back and maybe suck up the fare on the way back...

We did it a few times when I was a kid. We would drive for about 14 hours the first day and 10 the next! I always loved the signs for South of the Border.

Get the newest Cobra. Just make sure you hide it in VA. It's the only state on the way down where it's illegal.

We have an old cheapie, we paid $60 for it..worth every penny. See if you could borrow one.
