dr's miscarriage false alarm

hi, i'm new to this... but here is my story. i would appreciate any feedback you can offer...

i had a miscarriage this summer so when i found out a few weeks ago, that i was pregnant again, i was elated. when i went to the dr for my initial sono, there was an empty sac... so he did some blood work to see how the numbers looked. two days later, my numbers barely moved so my dr said it was not a viable pregnancy and that i was to schedule a d and c. i was supposed to go in this friday for that procedure but things were not sitting well w/ me. i was not spotting and felt very much so like i was pregnant. so i called the dr's office on monday. i said that if they knew that that blood test was 100% and there was no chance, than i was ok w/ things... otherwise i needed closure. so they set me up for another sono yesterday... and i'm 8 1/2 weeks pregnant! they were wrong. i saw the heart beat and heard it too.

i am so confused that a dr could make such a mistake. has anyone else out there experienced such a thing? please let me know... thanks for you time in reading this.

I've seen ohter girls here that have had that happen too, and who have gone on to have healthy pregnancies.

I'm glad you went with your gut! Chat Icon Chat Icon

This happened to someone I know and her daughter is now 5. She insisted on a second sono. Without a definite "no heartbeat" image of an embryo or fetus in a sono I wouldn't allow a D&C or any other terminating procedure. I am so glad you followed your instinct!!!!!

Re: dr's miscarriage false alarm

thanks! i talked to a new dr last night.... he thinks it's a case of the vanishing twin syndrome where there were two and my levels were high and then one didn't make it so my levels looked like they weren't going up fast enough but they really were for just one baby!!!! this is just sooo crazy. the last few weeks have been hell. it has taught me to just go w/ your gut feelings always. they are there for a reason!

i was about 6-7 weeks with the first sono... and my old dr was dumbfounded when he saw the results... he had no answers, hence, i talked to a new one last night.

Re: dr's miscarriage false alarm

I have heard of a few cases of this-it doesn't happen that often. Mostly when I waiting to find out if there was any hope for my mast pregnancy and doing some research on the web. It's amazing to me that this could happen. I didn't need a D&C after my miscarriage, but if I had I would have asked for another sono just to make sure.

Congratulations and thank goodness you went with your gut. A happy and healthy 9 months to you!

Re: dr's miscarriage false alarm

I have to say I would so upset about the whole thing. Thinking I would essencially abord a viable pregnancy.

I would find a new Dr. I would lose all faith in mine.

Re: dr's miscarriage false alarm

Ive heard about this also. This is why my dr office sent me to a sono office the day after the suspected that my pregnancy wasnt progressing. The sono place had higher tech machines and saw that blood had started to build in my uterus and there was def. no fetus (i was almost 9 wks). Im glad i got that 2n opinion bc i would be so sick that something like youre story could have been me

Re: dr's miscarriage false alarm

An empty sac at 6 weeks is generally not a good sign, so I'm not surprised your doctor didn't think the pregnancy was viable. But typically at that time in a pregnancy if nothing is seen, they'll ask you to come back for a follow-up sono in a week or two to make sure.

It's great that you insisted on a second sono. Congratulations on your pregnancy!!
