DS doctor recommended putting a tablespoon of oatmeal in his last bottle to help him sleep,
For those who have done this, do you have to use a special nipple? Did your child do well with it? I feel like it might choke him...
Thanks for your help, I always think of my questions after we leave the office.

Re: DS doctor recommended putting a tablespoon of oatmeal in his last bottle to help him sleep,
Does he have reflux?
I am surprised a ped would recommend this, I think itis an old school mentality and there is no reason to give cereal in a bottle.
And TBH, my DS didn't slee any better once he was on cereal.

No, he doesn't have reflux. I think they are trying to wait longer to start him on solids so they suggested this in case he started waking up at night to help fill him up

Well, cereal really doesn't do much for them, the main point of it is to practice with the spoon. And I really think it is an "old wives tale" that cereal will fill their bellies and have them sleep through the night.
There are "Y" cut nipples for cereal though.
ETA: Cereal is a solid....

Re: DS doctor recommended putting a tablespoon of oatmeal in his last bottle to help him sleep,
Our DS's are the same age (same birthdate!!!). My DS has been having cereal from a spoon since he was 11 weeks (I know I was early, but DS was drinking over 40ozs so Peds were ok with it).
Our DS's are 4.5 mos now. I personally don't see anything wrong with trying cereal from a spoon instead. Being your Ped think its ok for your son to have cereal in the first place, he must feel he has decent neck control to handle it.
I think putting it in the bottle at 4.5 mos old instead of spoon feeding is kinda pointless. JMO.
Just adding, in the beginning, the cereal did help DS sleep. Now, not so much.

Re: DS doctor recommended putting a tablespoon of oatmeal in his last bottle to help him sleep,
My DD started cereal at 5.5 months, by spoon. I don't put it in her bottle. It hasn't helped her sleep better at all. She loves it, and it's fun to feed her, but i haven't noticed a change in her sleeping, fullness, or anything like that.

Re: DS doctor recommended putting a tablespoon of oatmeal in his last bottle to help him sleep,
Well he has a doctor's appointment next friday so I think they might start it then. She told me this awhile ago but he was sleeping fine and so I ignored it. But he's starting to get up a little earlier every morning so I thought it might help but I think I'll just give him a little more fprmula in his last bottle and if it gets worse I'll try to spoon feed him a little. Thanks for all your help.

honestly if he is waking up earlier b/c he is hungry i would increase the amount of formula he is getting during the day. i really don't think that adding the cereal is going to do anything. and my DS did not sleep better while on solids either.
