i never heard of this type of therapy...what is it for? it looks great
It's callled hypotherapy or therapeutic horseback riding.
It is designed and adapted for children with special needs.
It helps them both physically and emotionally. Animals are known to have therapeutic effect on people (special needs or not).
My son has very poor core strength and balance. Which you do require to ride a horse.
In his case he will have 2 "aides". One to hold the horse and the other one will walk side by side to hold DS in the saddle since he does not have the strength yet to keep his balance when the horse moves. It will strengthen all his abs muscles and teach him about balance and rectifying it if he feels like going off balance. Those people are usually certified in such type of training.
There are a few programs on LI. Some for older kids only and some that will accept children his age. He is probably the youngest/smallest they have right now.

That's great!! I met a little boy and his dad a few months ago in the park (West Hills) who were coming from a therapy riding session. They raved about it. Go EJ!!

That's awesome, he looks great on that horse! 
My sister had riding therapy when she was little for similar issues. I remember I used to be so jealous that she got to go on the horses (we'd go with her but weren't allowed on of course). Anyway, it worked wonders for her, it's such an amazing program. Good Luck!
