DSLR moms - SOOOO frustrated, please help with a flash question

I have a Canon Rebel and the speedlight (580EXII). I LOVE how the pics come out with the flash.

But for Christmas, it started acting funny - it would only flash SOMETIMES. I thought it was the batteries, so I put a brand new set in the flash, but still same thing. Half of my Christmas pics came out horrible for lack of flash and being indoors. I'm soooooo frustrated and I'm not sure how to fix it. As fas as I know, neither I nor anyone else changed any settings.

Please help me figure out what could be wrong! Pretty please Chat Icon

Thanks!

Is the camera set on auto? I have the canon rebel xsi with external flash and I usually shoot in aperture priority or shutter priority modes. If I am in auto mode and there is enough light, my flash will not fire. I like AV and TV because I have not totally jumped into manual yet, but it gives me some control and has helped me really see how the two are related.

GL! and have fun!

OMG I had to resort to using the onboard flash all weekend (after realizing the freakin flash wasn't working), and it's blinding!!! Poor DS with all the pics I took. When DH took a pic of me, I was like AAACK my eyes Chat Icon

The 420EXII is in the $300 range I believe (haven't checked in a while).

The 580EXII was like $400 or so when DH got it for me last year.

But they make a HUUUUUUUUUGE difference IMO!

A friend of ours found a 420EX on Craigslist for like $100. I had tried to find a speedlight for myself, but never got lucky so DH got it for me for Christmas last year.

Sorry, forgot to say I shoot on P or M - and I'm having the same problem on either setting!

It's SOOOOOO frustrating. Please tell me someone knows how I can fix this.

I've had the flash for a year and never had this problem. Just don't know what I might have changed or what might be wrong.
