DSLR Users... WWYD?
Would you buy a lower level DSLR Camera and an additional lens
or a Higher Level DSLR Camera and just go with the basic lens it comes with?
I am trying to decide between the Canon Digital Rebel T1i (15mp and it takes HD video, comes with an 15-55mm IS lens) and a lower level Rebel that would leave me with enough additional $$$ to purchase an additional lens.
Thanks!!!!!!!

I agree.
eta. It would depend on what lens. Investing in a better lens is always my first option.

I would get the better camera. You can always buy additional lenses later.

I agree with this!
If you are getting the camera to take photos of your family, the kit lens, while it does not compare to better lenses, still takes beautiful photos.
If you are buying the camera for professional purposes, I would say either get the cheaper body with nicer lenses OR wait for holiday sales to save up and get a good body AND a good lens

OMG - definitely NOT professional! This is my first SLR camera. I like the T1i because of the option to take video. I usually take a LOT of video of DS with my point and shoot now, so it would be nice not to have to switch cameras.

It depends on the camera. I would get the camera if it would allow you to shoot at a higher ISO without so much noise and then eventually get a faster lens. Also between teh two cameras are you limited on lense options on any of them?
I'm no familiar with Canon as I shoot Nikon but there are some lenses that you can't use on the D40 and D60 unless you are going to manually focus them, that you can use on the D80 and above....
To me I would invest in a camera body that would allow me toe most versatility and then build on that by getting a nice fast lense down the line.

I'd get the better body, personally, and save up for lenses later. but being a Nikon person, can't suggest which of those two Canons to get. GL!

I agree too.
I also took a lot of video on my point and shoot and I honestly do not miss that feature at all on my DSLR.
I have a Canon Rebel too

Unless you get a higher res. camera body, I think the features are similar or not enough to justify getting a more expensive camera body. You might not even use them at the beginning.
I would get the best lens. That's where you are going to see the difference on your photo and you might even avoid a lot of frustration.

ITA
And you can rent lenses to see if you like them before making the investment

Re: DSLR Users... WWYD?
I was in your exact same situation a couple months ago. I had a nikon d80 that was stolen and when I got the $ back from insurance I decided to downgrade so that I could get an extra lens--best decision ever!! I ended up getting the rebel xs and purchased the 50mm 1.8 lens. I cannot tell you how much of a difference that lens makes! Worlds different than the body lens that comes w the camera. I say get the extra lens!!

You should try the 50 1.4 out, great lens
Also the 85 1.8 is great! Not cheap but still a great addition to any bag
I use borrowlenses.com when I'm traveling or want to try before I buy
