Mirena IUD users...come on in...
I have my 6 week PP appointment tomorrow and will discuss BC. They recommend the Mirena IUD.
Does it hurt during insertion? Did you have any side affects? Did it affect your periods? Do you like it??
Thanks!!

Re: Mirena IUD users...come on in...
There is a little discomfort with insertion but nothing awful. Take 600mg of Motrin before your appointment.
You'll have bleeding/spotting that is pretty irregular the first few months but then you'll get a super light period or no period at all which is great.
I haven't had any side effects. This is my second time getting one (got it out to TTC) so obviously I like it if I did it again

Does it hurt during insertion?
It's a little uncomfortable but not painful
Did you have any side affects?
I had some mild cramping for 2 days
Did it affect your periods?
I barely have a period, maybe every 4-5 months. They are really light spotting, so I just usually use a liner. Most months I may have some cramping for one day but that's it
Do you like it??
I LOVE not having to take a pill every day.

Re: Mirena IUD users...come on in...
As the previous posters said it is uncomfortable but it didnt hurt during the insertion.
I had mild cramping for 2-3 days
My periods was still a little heavy and long the 1st 2 cycles after getting the IUD but then they got shorter & lighter.
I got it in March and my last period 2 weeks ago was very light & short.
I LOVE it! I don't have to think about birth control at all. its taken are of. Not having to take a pill everyday is the BEST!

i don't have it, but i just wanted to chime in that i know 2, yes 2 people that have gotten pregnant with this. there's supposed to be a like 1 in 1,000,000 chance of getting pregnant and 2 people i know did. that's too much of a risk for me :-/

Good thread! I was thiking of this too. I was reading something about it and the idea of the "threads" is what was making me
May I add a question - do the threads affect you or DH at all?

Re: Mirena IUD users...come on in...
I don't have the Mirena but I have the Paraguard IUD (had it put in about 2 weeks ago at my 6 week apt).
I did not want the hormones so I chose Paraguard but I believe the procedure is the same.
Insertion was mildly uncomfortable but quick. I had cramping and spotting the next day. DH has not been able to feel any strings and I certainly cannot.
I just got my first PP period and it was a little heavier but nothing major (w/ Paraguard you may have heavier periods but I know w/ Mirena they are supposed to be lighter) - again mine was not really heavier (maybe for only a day it was).
It is 99.8% effective but of course other than abstinence nothing is 100% - not even surgery.

At first my DH would feel it a little bit. He would stop and say "that thing is poking me!" We would just have to change position and then he didnt feel it anymore. But as time went on and the IUD "settles in" he doesnt feel it at all. There might be the rare occasion where it will poke him but that is very rare now.
As for me I forget that I even have it. I never feel it during sex.
ETA: I looked into & was offered both Paraguard and Mirena. I decided to get Mirena because Paraguard is a copper IUD and I did not like the idea of having Copper in me. The hormornes in Mirena are VERY low amounts so I was OK with that.
