Re: Durable backpacks?

My kids have LL Bean backpacks. They have used them for four and two years respectively. I expect them to last for many years, and if for some reason the backpack fails, LL Bean will send you a new one under their warranty. I had mine for fifteen years of solid use.

Durable backpacks?

We get I think it's called High Sierra from Costco. Less than $20, very practical and durable. And of course, Costco has a great return policy if there's a problem. They usually have two color schemes that appeal to girls and two that appeal to boys.

I like LL Bean as well but bought Under Armour this year and have been happy with them so far (we had a battle and I was willing to get the Under Armour ones to avoid getting another character one that falls apart).

This! We got DD an Under Armor one this year because I refused to do another character backpack. So far it has really held up and will be her backpack again next year.

Durable backpacks?

Ok.. so her Kinder and 1st grade backpacks were BOTH $9 cute fun and obviously cheap walmart finds. Both held up. Kinder held up better because nothing much to take home and to school. 1st grade I had to mend once the shoulder strap. That was that. totally worth the cheap investment. 1st grade one light up princess pets.. totally awesome mama!!! LOL Kinder was just the princesses cause mama I love them.

Then came second grade.
She fell in love with this oddly shiny iridescent backpack at Spencer's. I'm thinking. This is unusual. But it fit and it was on sale. So why not. It had NOTHING on it. Just this silver white with iridescent shine to it. It stood out to be sure. It never once needed mending or repair of any type. It had two side pockets (always a must) and the one zippered pocket up front for tissues and small items (pencils, small toys she won from the treasure chest). I was shocked how well it lasted. No stains, no wear, no tear, frankly it looks darned good and it had the most use from all the years.

I see absolutely no rhyme or reason in spending good money on a backpack to be used by a small child who's first reaction at school is to literally toss the thing as far flung as possible on a cafeteria floor, gym floor or school room corner. To shove papers, pencils, crayons or markers in it indiscriminately without regards to marks or marring. So that she can drag on the ground if feigning being tired, to hold over her head in the rain. To sit on when listening to a story in the cafeteria if they've moved the tables away for some assembly. Nope. I am all about originality and uniqueness though. So can you find it in the crowd of Kinder to fifth graders similarly tossed backpacks tossed aside for breakfast and or book fair shopping, then we are golden. LOL

Re: Durable backpacks?

DS has a Land's End backpack that held up very well for 2 years. He's outgrowing it now and really beating it up at camp, but we'll probably get another one from there for this year.

Durable backpacks?

You use the same backpack year after year?

I would never! I used to have to and I HATED it. I was poor so I used either mine or my brothers or mended what I could get or got handed down. I'd sew on patches or whatever. New backpacks were a luxury. I envied anyone who could afford a new one each year.

I swore I'd NEVER make my child use the same backpack every year. and I don't. We made a big deal she gets to pick out her own. 2nd grade backpack is in great condition and sure she could use it another year but heck no. No way.

Only time I reused a backpack was college and beyond when I used to use one going in and out of the City.

She's only a kid once. So every year is a new backpack that suits her mood that year. It's like a snapshot of her 'thing' LOL Can't wait to see what she'll choose. I'm thinking it's going to be Avengers, Justice League or Teen Titans. We shall see.

Re: Durable backpacks?

For durable backpacks we love LLBean, but to be honest, one of the perks every year is for DS to choose his backpack and lunchbox. Last year we ordered LLbakcpack and lunchbox, but this year he wanted a backpack we found in Century21 and a Lands End lunch box. When DS was in K, it was a Toy Story backpack and we have changed it every year. LLBean holds nicely, but at the end of the year DS is tired of it. So -for us- I wont spend too much in a backpack, since I know DS will want a different one next year. Their likes change so much.

Re: Durable backpacks?

Pottery Barn each year since pre-school, durable and cute. We get new ones each year since it's just a tradition, but the old ones get passed on or kept for other things. Some of the other durable ones just aren't cute, and my girl is all about the pattern. This past school year I bought a Vera Bradley, and she loved that one. Held up nicely and lightweight. Will probably get a new pattern in VB for the fall.

Ds has had the same Llbean backpack since first grade-he's going into fifth. It still looks new. He did have a pottery barn wheeled one for a few months one year but the strap broke and I returned it and he went back to the llbean. I will buy him a new one if he asks but he hasn't.
