Ear Candling... have you ever tried it??
So this new chick in my office was just telling me about this.... she had it done over the weekend for the first time and LOVED it!!
I want to get it done.. lately I feel like I can't hear ANYTHING!!!
Can anyone recommend a place that does it in Nassau?

Re: Ear Candling... have you ever tried it??
I know many people ( a lot of Italians ) swear by it HOWEVER I also heard that it does nothing - the wax that collects is actually from the candle.
Everyone I know does it at home.

Re: Ear Candling... have you ever tried it??
I always thought it was an interesting concept but still picture me with a burning candle and setting my hair on fire.
However, they do sell at-home-kits at most drugstores like CVS or Walgreens. When I've seen them they were near the eye care section or vitamins.
good luck and let us know how it goes if you actually go through with it!

Re: Ear Candling... have you ever tried it??
I can't do this at home.. i'll set my head on fire..lol
Here's what it claims to do...
Ear candling," also known as auricular candling or coning, refers to various procedures that involve placing a cone-shaped device in the ear canal and supposedly extracting earwax and other impurities with the help of smoke or a burning wick. The origins of candling are obscure. Ancient Tibet, China, Egypt, the pre-Columbian Americas, and even the mythical city of Atlantis are cited as possible contributors. The procedures supposedly create a low-level vacuum that draws wax and other debris out of the ear canal. Some proponents even claim that impurities are removed from the inner ear, the facial sinuses, or even the brain itself, all of which are somehow connected to the canal. Proponents claim that candling can:
- relieve sinus pressure and pain - cleanse the ear canal - improve hearing - assist lymphatic circulation - regulate pressure - purify the mind - strengthen the brain - relieve pain and fever associated with a ruptured eardrum - cure swimmer's ear and other ear infections - relieve earaches - act as an alternative to "tubes put in your ears" - sharpen the senses of smell, taste, and color perception - stabilize emotions - stop tinnitus (ringing in the ears) - help TMJ pain and stiffness - relieve vertigo - fortify the central nervous system - clear the eyes, - purify the blood, - act as an anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, or antibiotic - cure Meniere's syndrome - aid sinusitis - release blocked energy - reduce stress and tension - cure auricular zona (a herpes zoster infection of the ear) - open and align the chakras - open the spiritual centers and cleanse the auric bodies.

This is from Webmd:
Ear Candling
Ear candling is not just ineffective; it can be dangerous if the burning wax drips into the ear canal.

Re: Ear Candling... have you ever tried it??
Personally I'd just pay the copay at the ENT to get my ears cleaned, instead of spending less money but possibly injuring myself.
Then again, I wear glasses and contacts and don't think they're so much trouble that I'd put a laser and knife near my eye.

The ENT uses chemicals and medications to clean your ears and break up the wax. Ear candling is all nataural.

Re: Ear Candling... have you ever tried it??
I had it done once by a woman who came to our office in NYC and did a bunch of us in the smoking room when we were allowed to have one of those.... I thought it was great. The amount of crap that came out...wow...mostly it was hair, I guess from haircuts. After that I bought a kit online and did it myself at home...wasn't as effective and it was a bit scary doing it to myself.

It was really neat. There was a group of us and we all sat around watching each other....gross, but fascinating at the same time. The woman who did it told us a story of a woman who had a barbie doll shoe in her ear from when she was little and it came out. I don't know if that was bs, but it was a good story. And I don't know if it was all in our heads, but you get the feeling like you can hear better.

Re: Ear Candling... have you ever tried it??
I've done it and was really happy with the results! I've always had problems with my ears, and it was pretty fascinating (in a gross kind of way) the amount of stuff that comes out of your ears! (i had a lot of infection that showed up in the candle)
My sister and I have done it on each other in the past....the ear cone is long, and as long as you continually check on it - you should be OK.
This thread makes me want to do it again!

I went to a regular doctor who blasted water into my ear with some special device.... hurt a little but after what came out, I could hear again! No chemicals or medications (or burning wax!)

The candling did not hurt at all. It felt good actually, just warm....not hot at all.

Well I think you and I and are sisters should have ourselves a little party and do it to each other!
I have always wanted to do this. DH asked at the ENT once and they told him they did not do it unless there was a medical reason to???
