Ear infection advice and ENT rec.

DD is almost 17 months but we have had chronic ear infections since Feb of last year and 4 since Sept. We called LIENT and they checked DD and she does have mild hearing loss due to the fluid in her ears. The dr. wants to put tubes in her ears..DH is not keen and wants a second opinion...questions for ANYONE who has had a child with Ear infections.
1. Were the tubes successful?
2. Can you give any info about the surgery? (process/recovery)
3. DD also wants a second opinion can you recommend your ENT? we went to see Dr. Grosso w/ Long Island ENT
THANKS SO MUCH FOR ANY HELP OR INFO!!!!!!!!!

Absolutely!! He had them put in on 2/2/09, only 1 incident (clogged tube) which was sucked out by the ENT, that was about 3 mos ago.

2. Can you give any info about the surgery? (process/recovery) It is VERY fast. The nurse took him from me in the prep area back to the OR. I walked back to the awaiting room while DH walked across the street to Dunkin Donuts and brought me back a coffee. I had one sip of the coffee and we received the call that he was done. He woke up groggy (as to be expected), ate an icepop (he had to urinate in order to leave the hosp). When we arrived home, he went right to bed for 3 hrs. When he woke, he was as normal as could be!

THANKS SO MUCH FOR ANY HELP OR INFO!!!!!!!!! We used Peconic ENT, they're in Aquebogue. Might be too far for you. I can't say enough good about them. We saw the ENT the 3rd week in January and he recommended the surgery. I was hesitant. That weekend we ended up in the ER (Again) w/ a 103 fever and diagnosed w/ double ear infection. The next morning I called the ENt and had surgery scheduled for 2/2/09.

Cara- Troy had an ear infection each month from Aug '08 to end of Jan '09. After that last (of 3) visits to the ER I was convinced that I HAD to do this. I was tearing myself up about it b/c he was going to be going under anesthesia, I was afraid of something going wrong during surgery, I was afraid of the tubes falling out, etc, etc. But I also hated that every month, 2-3 weeks of each month he was on antibiotics! We were VERY lucky, his hearing was NOT effected by the chronic ear infections, but who knows how it would be now.

It's been 9 mos and *knock on wood* the only issue we had was one tube clogged one time. We went to the ENT and he sucked it out- it was uncomfortable, but FAST. Every time we go to the Peds office, they reassure me that they tubes are in place and looking good.

I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Let me know if you have anymore questions!!!

You can get a 2nd opinion if it makes you comfortable but honestly if her ear infections are bad enough she has hearing loss, any at all, I say she needs the tubes. Yes it is scary b/c it is "surgery" but you also dont want the situation to get worse. I had chronic, severe ear infections as a child and also had hearing loss and still minor to do this day.

Re: Ear infection advice and ENT rec.

Thanks so much Jill and JellyBean! I am so on board for the tubes and totally understand that it is important and we need to do this soon. DH is a little harder to convince but after last night's screaming we need to get these tubes put in to stop these painful ear infections.
Does anyone have any other ENT recomendations????? PLEASE Chat Icon
