Early care/late care for Kindergarten
HOLY CRAP! I called today to find out about early/late care for Alex's elementary school next year and it costs $423 a month! That's half the cost of her preschool tuition!! What the heck??!
I think the idea of an au-pair, especially when Yael reaches kindergarten age, and we'll have to pay over $800 a month, is starting to grow on me...

Yes. The early care is what kills it. Once we hit full time elementary school, it was a lot less. Aftercare only is about $270/month

YOWZA! I was afraid of this for us too...Just when I got used to the idea of not paying for preschool/day care as a bonus to KG. An Au Pair or nanny may be the way to go. I was also thinking of paying another mom I'm friends with in the neighborhood to get Grace off the bus in the afternoon when I have RE closings that run late.
just a thought...Do you have a friend in the neighborhood who can do the before care for you?

I think we decided that DH can manage the morning without early care - school starts at 8:30am, which means, she'll be on the bus, the latest, around 8:15am, right? He can handle that, we think. And we do have one preschool family that has a son in Alex's class, who is also going to the same school, and they live two blocks away, so I'm hoping we can arrange something with her. So I'm only signing up for late care, which is $270.

Our Before and after care is about $6 an hour from what my friends tell me. Luckily, I don't need it, but that sounds pretty cheap.

I can tell you that DD is the very last bus stop before the bus goes to the school. We have to be at the bus stop at 8:34, it comes between then and 8:39 on a bad day. Her school starts at 8:55 and we are around the corner. Just to give you an idea of the time. The 1st kids that are picked up are at the bus stop around 8:15-8:20.
ETA: You can call the Central Office of your school district and they can tell you the current pick up time for your bus stop. That might help you.

Awwwwwwwessommmmeness, thank you for the idea! Our new house is literally 2 blocks away from the school so I assumed she would be picked up on the late end of the spectrum, but I'll find out!

Re: Early care/late care for Kindergarten
for both before and after care it is a little over $400 in our district. That's why me and DH worked out our schedule so we only have to do one. I think before care is 170 and after care is 270, but if you do both its 400. So one year we did before, one year after, and now we have family and neighbors all help out.
