Early intervention-update
Jacob has qualified for Early intervention services... I had written about this a couple of weeks ago and thought some would be interested in the outcome...
I am going through Cooper kids... Thanks everyone who had fm me about this situation and with names of places and such... We went with Cooper Kids because my good friend's Aunt is the owner and it is one of the biggest on the island.. otherwise I would of went with Marion Solomon..
I wont know the logistics to my meeting with the state but it will start 2 weeks after..The whole process will have taken 1 month....
Also, I just want to let everyone know that if you have a concern, even if it is at 18 months and everyone around you is telling you he won't qualify or it is too early to test , or that he is too young... there is no harm in getting the evaluation.. Our tax dollars pay for it...
I am very happy with the outcome oh, and his hearing is perfect ( got that checked out too).

Re: Early intervention-update
ok, 72 people looked at this and not one response...
I usually don't care when no one responds to my topics but this to me was very important issue ( not that showing pics of your cute kids is not)...I just thought being in a forum there would at least be a response or 2. I am sure if this was another poster who posts all the time they would have had at least 10 and I know the boards are slow....
Its just very annoying sometimes and not nice. I know people have to agree with me on this....

Re: Early intervention-update
I think that is great that you are getting the services for your son that he needs. It is wonderful that you were/are on top of it and taking care of the situation. Good luck when it starts.

Re: Early intervention-update
Jacobs friends are a couple of months older than him and I would see what he did at his age... He wouldn't say much just point or grunt but he would understand everything that I would say... This was at 14 months or so.I said to myself if he is doing the same thing by 18 months that he was doing at 14 months I would do something about it.. Also from raeading on here I would see what other kids his age were saying and he wasn't...
At my 18th month appointment my ped asked me what he does with words and I told him he says mama, dada and up so he suggested that I give EI a call. He himself did not think he would qualify but you have nothing to lose with getting the evaluation. you do have to get paperwork signed by your pediatrician to get the evaluation..
My brother also told me at his practice at 18 months they send them for a hearing test before they proceed with any other services.. That is what prompted me to get the audiology test too and I am glad that they came out with a good income..
He will be 19 months in a couple of days and still maybe says 4 words..
It was a gut instinct for me to do this because, like I said people around me thought I was being an overly protected mother or told me he is too young...
I just want to be able to help my son in anyway I can.. It is so not a bad thing to get speech or spec ed nowadays compared to years ago... Every little bit helps.. Trust me--I know he will eventually speak and once he does he won't shut up but I want to help him now..
Hope this answers your question...

Re: Early intervention-update
It's great that he qualified and you're getting started so early. EI makes a HUGE difference! I'm a speech pathologist and I've actually gotten kids at 3 years old that were still not talking and their parents just brushed it off that they were late talkers. I always wish that they would have gotten started earlier. And like you mentioned, the great thing in NY is that the eval and services are all free. If you have that gut feeling that something isn't right there's no harm in getting an evaluation.
Good luck to Jacob!

Re: Early intervention-update
I just saw this post.
You are so smart to have had him evaluated. You had nothing to lose. So now he will have extra help which will give him a leg up.
You are truly a caring mom who has your son's best interest at heart
And Cooper kids is a great choice!

Re: Early intervention-update
I think it's GREAT, and an excellent role model, that you are seeking the best services for your son I'm a huge, huge, huge proponent of seeking assistance whenever you instinct tells you to... stemming from the fact that I grew up with a significant learning disability. My mom "knew" something was wrong when I was in 2nd grade - everyone kept poo pooing her, including my teachers. She persisted and persisted with the school district to get me tested, and lo and behold, the test results showed that I had a learning disability. She pushed for the best services our district could provide, and as a result, I excelled, and I can credit all of my success to that early intervention.
We had a family friend who was diagnosed with a similar disability at the same time - the parents refused to admit there was a problem, and take a wild guess where he is right now? Living at home, no college degree, no job.
So, what I'm trying to say is, kudos to you - you're taking the right steps, and remember that even if there is some kind of impediment, your son still has a long road of success ahead of him

Good for you, taking this initiative as soon as you felt an instinct that you should. It will be great for him and for mommy as well, when you see how great he does.

Re: Early intervention-update
thank you so much for posting i am an occupational therapist who treats EI and preschoolers and i cant tell you how impt it is for a child who needs services, to get it as early as possible. I cant tell you how many people i come across who think there child may need evaluations (e.g speech, PT, OT) but thinks they wont qualify, or their child will grow out of it, etc. The younger they start and the sooner it is addressed, the more likely the issue wil be corrected or resolved before they end up in real school. I also recieved speech as an EI and preschooler and you would never know by talking to me now.

Re: Early intervention-update
I'm glad you had a positive experience with EI. I'm a huge proponent of getting an evaluation done if you suspect something is amiss.
I had my son evaluated intervention through the school district (he was over 3). The school district felt it was the environment he was in & suggested switching daycares. We did wind up switching but the peace of mind it gave me was well worth it.
Glad you listened to your instincts!
Oh & I clicked on this a few times today but was too busy at work to respond properly. My apologies!

Re: Early intervention-update
I have been saying this to my husband for the last couple of months and he has been fighting me on it. But Steven will be 18 months on Sun and really still says no coherent words. He talks constantly but it's all giberish(sp?)
I really need to do this. Can you tell me how I go about getting him tested?

Re: Early intervention-update
Thats great that you are getting him help and I'm sure you must be relieved that he doesn't have any hearing problems. I was glad I read your post because I have an appointment for EI to come and evaluate my DS who is 6.5 months old but since he starting rolling over two weeks ago and is attempting to creep, I was going to cancel it. BUt now I think I may keep it, because perhaps they will find something I've overlooked or at least will confirm that he's right where he should be developmentally.
Good luck to you and your DS.
