Re: Early intervention-update
That is great that you are following thru with Jacob. I too, am in the same boat as you. My Jacob is 15 months and only says Daddy and Yes. My ped said not to worry b/c he was always a little behind in certain areas, but I'm not so sure.
Jacob was evaluated when he was 3 months for torticollis with Early Intervention and he didnt qualify but they keep up with him every few months by sending me questionaires and then a counselor calls me and we discuss his progress. The next questionaire is going to be at 16 months and I have a feeling he is not going to do well speech wise, so I will prob be setting up some kind of speech therapy for him as well. I think its great that you are right on top of things. I have a friend who's 4 yr old nephew doesnt speak at all, and still poops and pees in his pants, and the parents say "He'll talk when he's ready"
He stares off into space, and if you call his name and stand right in front of him, he still doesnt acknowledge you, and I find that sad. When I ask if he's talking yet, she tells me.. "He speaks caveman language." I dont find that funny. This poor child clearly has a problem and is not getting the help he needs because his parents are in denial.
Good luck with your Jacob, keep us all posted!!

Re: Early intervention-update
Hi! My daughter has been receiving Physical Therapy since she was 13 months old. Now at almost 3, she was just reevaluated to see if she will qualify for services in the fall (CPSE transition). She not only qualified--but was given more p/t, Occupational therapy, and a feeding specialist. As she got older, and saw her around other kids her age (I started her in preschool in January), I realized how much more services she really needed. I pushed my EI coordinator for a review of her current services and now DD is finally getting the services she needs. And she is qualified for additional services in the fall.
I am glad to hear your son qualified! If you have any questions about the process, please feel free fm me! I wish you luck. Jacob will do great!

Re: Early intervention-update
Glad it worked out for you. I am concerned about my dds speech - she is almost 15 months - but the drs tell me not to worry. We will wait a few months and see if she improves.

Re: Early intervention-update
Good luck with the EI! My nephew had speech once a week and in two weeks time there was already a major difference. Now we can't get him to stop talking!! I am glad that everything is working out.

Re: Early intervention-update
My daughter was born 13 years ago with Mosaic Down Syndrome..she began services at 2 1/2 months...one pediatrician told us to wait until we saw delays and others told us to get an evaluation right away...Had we waited for delays she wouldnt of received services until she was 3-4 years old!!! Alot of children with MOSAIC down syndrome dont have delays until language becomes more complex...
My advice to anyone facing this issue is if you think their is a need have your child evaluated for Early Intervention Services...it couldnt hurt!

Re: Early intervention-update
Early intervention is CRUCIAL - so glad you took the plunge! I am in the autism field - but whatever the needs are, it is vital - and no one should ever think they shouldnt test and see if they qualify - good for you!!!
ETA: Sometimes people click on posts for all different reasons - maybe a parent is concerned about her child and wanted to read about your experiences with EI, but doesnt feel ready to respond, or, sometimes people click out of curiosity, feel they have nothing to really say, and move on.
Sometimes it says people have clicked, and they are in the middle of writing back, but you wont see the posts yet, and some people are just lurkers... This may be a topic not everyone can relate to, or are comfortable with, but read out of curiosity anyway - I wouldnt take it personally at all!

Re: Early intervention-update
Just saw this post now!
So glad you are getting EI. In my line of work it is something I have to suggest to parents on a regular basis.
I have seen how much it can do for a child and I unfortunately have seen the effects of children whose parents refuse to admit their child needs help
good luck with it!

Re: Early intervention-update
My friend took her DD to get evaluated at 18mths because she has a vocabulary of about 3-4words. She did not qualify but was told to get her reevaluated at 2yrs. She was told by 2yrs old they should have a vocabulary of about 75words. Does this sound right? She's 22mths now and says probably less than 10 words don't see how she going to able to catch up without some help.

I'm glad you followed through with your gut regardless of what other people told you and that you are getting the services your child needs!
