Early waking in the morning - PLEASE help!!!

4:30 in the morning is just not human. Chat Icon Chat Icon

James goes to bed between 7 and 7:15 - anything later and he's a hot, whiny, overtired mess. There are RARE days where he'll sleep until 6 or 6:15, but more often than not, he's up anywhere between 4:15 and 4:45.

- We'll try to let him cry in his crib for a while to see if he'll go back to sleep. Sometimes he does, but only for 5 minutes or so.

- We put toys at the foot of his crib and he wants nothing to do with them.

- We've tried bringing him into bed with us - he just gets super hyper and wants to climb on us.

Most mornings I'll go in there and pick him up and sit on the glider and he'll doze on me until about 6 or so which leads me to believe that he's still tired, but he will NOT sleep in his crib past 4:45.

It's especially killer because DH travels for a living and I'm alone with him for the majority of the week. Chat Icon

What can I do about this? DO I let him CIO like we did for bedtime? Chat Icon I'm petrified for daylight savings time at the end of October. Am I doomed? Chat Icon

Re: Early waking in the morning - PLEASE help!!!

I know it sounds crazy, but why not try an earlier bedtime? Riley goes down by 6:30...I've heard the earlier the bedtime, the longer they sleep. It's worth a shot! Maybe try inching it back by 15 minutes for a few days, then work it back to a half hour over time? Just a suggestion!Chat Icon

Ugh this must be unbearable for you!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Riley gets super hyper in bed with us too!

I haven't done this myself, but my MIL suggested I give him a small bottle in the crib (2-3oz). She said they will usually take it and fall back to sleep. I know it is a bit old school, but I also know you are at your wits end! Chat Icon

It just seems so counter-intuitive! So crazy that it just might work! Chat Icon

I'll try it tonight. With my luck, he'll be up at 3:30. Chat Icon

I think you're right - if he's falling asleep on you, he's probably still tired. If it was me I would probably try CIO first, but I don't know if that will work, since he is STTN already... I am sorry V Chat Icon

Yeah I've read it in so many places that earlier bedtimes work for some kids. I hope it doesn't backfire on you- then you can kill me!Chat Icon

I believe I also read it in Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child. Maybe CIO is really the only thing you can do when he wakes at that time?

Did you read my post from yesterday. I have been in the same hell for about a month. Ive tried it all. Today we are going to shorten his naps hoping that will help. Yesterday he only napped for 45 mins and was still up at 4 this morning.

So sorry. We went through this exact same thing with DD a few weeks ago. It lasted a few weeks and has now passed..but I understand how exhausting it is.
Maybe he is teething? Is it always or has it just started? I agree with PP about an earlier bed time. DD goes to bed anywhere from 6:30-7 and now sleeps till 5:30-6. Its still early, but much more managable. Hang in there!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Maybe you and I should move in together for a while and let the boys beat the crap out of each other in the wee hours of the morning while we sleep in. Chat Icon

Re: Early waking in the morning - PLEASE help!!!

We've got the same problem. It's not as bad now, because I've been putting him in later. I haven't tried a super-early bed time, but in general I find if I put him in around 7, he's up at 5:30. If I put him in at 8, he'll wake up early still, say 6ish, but will usually go back to sleep (on me, of course) until 7:30-8 after a bottle.

It's hard for us to let him cry because we live in an apartment.

This is what I used to do. Wake before 7-they got a bottle and slept until 8:30-9 or so

If I try this, (which I'm not completely opposed to) I'm just afraid of it becoming a habit. Either way, I'm still up at 4:15 because once I'm up, I'm up. Chat Icon

I did CIO with TYler the other day - he was waking up at 4:30/5....it worked, but he also wakes up Jack at this point. This morning I was going to let him cry for a few minutes but then Jack got up.

I'm all for CIO at this hour.

Re: Early waking in the morning - PLEASE help!!!

We had the same thing with JJ. Then we started to let him stay up until 8-8:30 & that early morning waking went away. There are nights where he is a tired mess but for us, the earlier he went to bed, the earlier he got up. Dealing with his fussiness & whining in the evening is MUCH easier then getting up before 6am! HSH, HC says that anything before 6am is considered "sleep time" and that you should refrain from going in before then. Like I said, I would've let him cry, but we live in an apartment Chat Icon

And RE: you being up for 4 hours by homeroom, I have a friend who says that once she gets to work, she has to ask her coworkers if it's a normal time to eat lunch! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Early waking in the morning - PLEASE help!!!

We went through a period of this with Loey...

he was waking up at 4:45 everyday instead of his usual 7 or 7:30!

I think in our case, he wasn't feeling well and was teething, so we didn't let him CIO until we were sure he was feeling better. Once he was, we let him CIO and it took about 15 minutes before he'd fall asleep again. Sometimes we'd have to let him CIO again that same morning, but we made a pact not to go in to get him before 6... and now he's sleeping until 7 or 7:30 sometimes.

He goes to sleep at 8 or 8:30 though

Thanks everyone for your advice and shared stories! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Looks like my options are:

* give a small bottle when he wakes and pray that he falls back asleep

* let him CIO and pray that he falls back asleep

* put him to bed earlier and pray that he sleeps later

* put him to bed later and pray that he sleeps later

Looks like I'll be doing a lot pf praying, no matter which option we roll with Chat Icon Chat Icon

I also wanted to add in that he *STILL* only has his 2 bottom teeth at 12.5 months old. Maybe it's teething? Chat Icon He is just getting over roseola as well. We can't catch a break here lately. Wahhhhh Chat Icon Chat Icon

I wouldn't do the bottle. It will become a habit IMO. I would do the CIO. As hard as it is, even if he is crying for a half hour, do it.

Ughhh that sucks V! I thought you had figured out why he was waking when you went to the ped. Guess that wasn't the reason after all Chat Icon I would probably do a CIO at that time Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Ok - so if I do decide to do a CIO, which I think I'm leaning towards, at what point is enough enough? I would hate to see him CIO for an hour and then have to wake him to go to the sitter like a half hour after that. I'm on the road by 6:45.
