"East Northport home with 79 dogs"
Suffolk police are in the process of conducting a raid of an East Northport home filled with 79 dogs, authorities say. Police and animal rescue crews are at the scene, where they say the homeowner may have been running a puppy mill. Rescuers found dozens of purebreds living in deplorable conditions in the basement, police say. The dogs will be taken to be evaluated and the owner, Irene Monroig, is facing numerous charges.

What in the world is she doing with 79 dogs????????/
She's suppose to be a vet that does "grooming" at her home. With the license plate "puppy 4u" I don't think I believe the groomer defense.
Newsday story:
BY CARL MACGOWAN | [email protected] 8:00 PM EDT, May 6, 2008 Dozens of dogs were removed from a suspected East Northport puppy mill Tuesday by police and firefighters wearing face masks and air tanks.
The dogs, most of them in small cages, were filthy, scared and living in a house filled with foul air, said Roy Gross, chief of the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Many of the dogs were carried to a mobile animal hospital parked outside the Wicks Road house as police investigated.
Irene Monroig, 66, faces misdemeanor animal cruelty charges under the state's agriculture and markets law, Gross said. If convicted, Monroig faces a year in prison, a $1,000 fine or both, he said.
She could face other charges pending further investigation, he said.
"I'm not saying it is a puppy mill," he said. "But we will investigate it to see if it is a puppy mill."
At least 50 dogs -- mostly small breeds such as poodles and shih tzus -- were removed from the house after the Town of Huntington received an anonymous complaint, Gross said. Two squirrels and a parrot also were taken from the house.
Gross said Monroig signed the animals over to the SPCA, which planned to put them up for adoption. He said the home was "like a hellhole."
Vanity plates on a Lexus SUV parked in the driveway read "PUPPY 4U." Records list the home's occupant as Irene Hohwiesner, 66.
A woman who left the house refused to speak as she ducked past journalists and went into a neighbor's house.
Neighbors said they noticed a foul odor coming from Monroig's house, and a complaint was filed with the town at least once when the dogs got loose in the neighborhood.
Noreen Driscoll, whose property abuts Monroig's, said dogs from Monroig's house sometimes got into her yard through a hole in the fence. The dogs also barked constantly when they were outside, she said.
Monroig was a nice woman, but "we thought she was odd," Driscoll said.
Another neighbor, Cindy Sorgenfrei, of South Haven Drive, defended Monroig, calling the investigation a "witch hunt."
Monroig is a veterinarian who grooms dogs at the house, said Sorgenfrei, who said they have been neighbors for 40 years.
"It's never bothered me," she said of the large number of dogs at the house.
New York State records do not list Monroig as a licensed veterinarian.
Gross said the dogs will be examined by veterinarians and spayed and neutered before being made available for adoption. Adoption applications can be obtained from the SPCA Web site, suffolkspca.org.
He said the dogs appear to be purebreds.
"We're already getting tons of phone calls," Gross said. "I feel that all these animals will make good pets."

Re: Breaking News from News 12
Yes there were alot of dogs. She has always had alot of dogs. There weren't 79 dogs. This lady has lived here for over 40 years. Nobody complains. We all knew she was a breeder. As for her being a groomer, not true to my knowledge. She works at the local animal emergency.
This just sucks. I feel so bad for her. Shes such a nice lady. Always so involved in whatever our street did.
I obviously can't defend the condition from the house.
Just know---shes harmless. and it's not a puppy mill.

I'm sorry, being you know her I'm sure it's very hard. And I'm sure she's a very nice lady, but she doesn't seem to be a responsible "breeder" and from theimages on the news it would look more like a puppy mill. I googled her name and the only thing I really saw was something from the AKC:
The AKC's Management Disciplinary Committee has suspended Irene Monroig (E. Northport, NY) from all AKC privileges for a period of five (5) years, effective May 7, 2001, and imposed a $1000 fine for having submitted, or caused to be submitted, registration applications which she knew, should have known, or had a duty to know, contained false certification. (Multiple Breeds)
And people asking questions if they ever bought dogs from this breeder.
Hopefully the dogs will now be taken care of properly and adopted out to loving homes.

So what is the purpose of 79 dogs trapped there? Puppy mill or not, that woman should be in jail.

I don't think mistreating animals is "harmless", I'm sorry. I am sure she was aware of the filth and the poor living conditions these animals were subjected to.

I just saw the story on Fox 5 News. Broke my heart, those dirty matted dogs shakling from fear and a matted dirty poodle stepping on her own pups in her cage. Disgusts me.

Either she is a head case or she was breeding irresponsibly. Whats the difference between her home and a puppy mill??? They are both horrible living conditions for any animal... I hate to say it but sometimes you really Dont "know" your neighbors. How many times have you heard of a person killing there family members in there home and when the neighbors are interviewed they are all shocked.... All I can say is THANK GOD she was exposed and those dogs can have a chance at a decent life... This was very sad... She hopefully is learning from this.

Re: Breaking News from News 12
I believe her license plate said
"Puppy 4 U"
I suspect that is a backyard breeder. In fact, she supposedly lost her AKC license due to neglect of some sort from what I heard. Scream puppy mill. What else would she be doing with all those dogs?
Terrible, those poor dogs, how they suffered.

ITA. Those dogs were treated like insects, or like garbage. This woman has issues, and needs to pay the price somehow. And those dogs deserve good homes. I would have ratted her A$$ out in a second if I saw all these dogs appearing from her home....

Dh and I were crying when we saw those poor dogs, those poor pups, those poor matted babes thirsty for a drink of water. What is wrong with this woman, I don't care WHO knows her or HOW NICE she supposedly is? Apparently NOT to animals. Or she needs mental help at this point b/c she can't possibly be in her right mind, and if she is, then she is a criminal. Sorry to be blunt. I am very angry about this.

Re: "East Northport home with 79 dogs"
It ended up being 56 dogs...which is still deplorable.
I hope that they can find good homes for these dogs...you know they are all going to be a mess from their prior treatment and need lots of love and attention to become normal, happy dogs.
Stuff like this is so sad.

I agree- why are animals treated like they don't count? Would we do this with children? Would we put our children to sleep when we got tired of them? This kind of thing truly disgusts me!

I was thinking the same thing Gerty. 79 dogs, 59 dogs - doesn't make a difference to me.
They were obviously not being treated humanely and that's the crime in this situation.
These poor pups are going to need very special people to take care of them and give them the kind of love and attention they're going to need.
I hope they can all recover from this.

Re: "East Northport home with 79 dogs"
Finding this out this morning upset me. Being a huge animal lover, I do not understand why this woman should have all of those dogs in her home. I pray all of those dogs find loving homes. Do we know which shelter they were brought to?

I'm pretty sure her neighbors had no idea of what was going on in that house. I'd *like* to think if anyone did, they would have called the authorities sooner. KWIM?
Posted by Custommade9 Seriously, I agree. What is wrong with the neighbors who are defending her? I doubt any of them would board their pet with her.
Again, I think her neighbors had no idea of the true horrors going on in the house. From their POV she seemed like a nice lady. She kept a nice house (from the outside) drove a nice car and was probably for the most part quiet.
I could see how a neighbor who has never gone in her house would think she's a great person.
At least someone did report her and these poor dogs, bird and squirrels are out of there.
Now, personally, do I believe she was a PM? Yes. But honestly, that determination is up to the authorities.
