Finding this out this morning upset me. Being a huge animal lover, I do not understand why this woman should have all of those dogs in her home. I pray all of those dogs find loving homes. Do we know which shelter they were brought to?

Again, I think her neighbors had no idea of the true horrors going on in the house. From their POV she seemed like a nice lady. She kept a nice house (from the outside) drove a nice car and was probably for the most part quiet.
I could see how a neighbor who has never gone in her house would think she's a great person.
At least someone did report her and these poor dogs, bird and squirrels are out of there.
Now, personally, do I believe she was a PM? Yes. But honestly, that determination is up to the authorities.
I definately see your point. Like I mentioned in one of my previous posts.... You really dont "know" your neighbors all the time... Sometimes they turn out to be mass murderers and everyone is always shocked. I hope you are right and NOT ONE neighbor has ever been inside her home to see one of her cute little puppies???? Lets see about that!

it really seems like this was a case of animal hoarding -- and usually people like that have mental issues and need counseling/help. i'm sure neighbors thought she was just a nice old lady, and it turns out she needed serious help....now she will get it and so will the animals

Do you REALLY think we knew she had 56 dogs, a bird and 2 baby squirrels? No. Did we know she had alot of dogs. Yes. Did we know she was a dog breeder, yes.
But seriously..unless you live here--don't say what is wrong with the neighbors. We had no clue.

I would agree with you Melissa, but her license plate said "puppy 4u". That to me indicates she wasn't a hoarder but more of a PM. I don't want to say BYB b/c as I understand it, BYBs don't have that many dogs. According to the news reports this woman had over 50 pups and the other assorted animals.
I also don't consider her a breeder since to me a breeder is someone who breeds dogs for the love of the animal, the standard of the breed and will do everything by the book. This woman didn't do any of that. As a matter of fact her AKC membership was suspended for trying to register mixed breed pups.
Honestly, that's not the practice of a breeder. That's something a PM would do.

April, I understand your defensiveness but please try to understand I don't think this poster was specifically attacking you. I know it came off that way but I really don't think that was the intent.
I'm sure if this had taken place somewhere else the same kind of response would have gone unnoticed to you but since you ARE one of this woman's neighbors of course you're taking it personally (as I would too!).
I have no doubt you guys had NO idea of what was really going on behind closed doors.
Do any of us really know what goes on behind closed doors of our neighbors??

Maybe she started as a breeder (hence the license plate) - and then it ballooned into a PM-esque situation. She was living alone in the house....(after her divorce) and maybe she just got nuts with the animals....like some hoarders do. i think there was a time when she wasn't like this--and it got out of control.
either way--i'm just glad the animals were removed and they can be treated and found good homes

You definately have every right to feel defensive... I would too if I didn't know and people were questioning me. But I have to ask you... No one has ever been in there?? Not one person? If everyone thought she was just a breeder didn't they question the amount of dogs in there? Did she have people come over the get the pups when they were ready to be sold? You mentioned she was a very nice lady and this was harmless so you have to know her well enough to say that... Seriuosly this house is condemed??? that's no joke.. This is not even fit for a human... Please i am not attacking you. these are just questions I was curious about.. And being you offerd the info on being her neighbor... I figure who would know better than you.
Please do not take this in any negative way. I definately believe you had no idea (not that it matters to you what I believe) but I am just trying to make sense of it all. and get to the truth... Believe me I know how the "news" works. things are always blown out of per portion.. So please let me apologize if I was disrespectful to you in anyway.

I agree, I don't think she's altogether with it and who knows? Maybe her divorce sent her over the edge.
Does she have any children or family? It's a shame if she does and this situation got as out of control as it did.
I, too am glad the dogs are out of there and hopefully will all be placed in homes.

i think she was totally alone--her ex died shortly after the divorce and she had a tenant that lived in another house she owned....but other than that i dont' think she had family around. (not 100% about whether she had kids, and if she did--if they lived nearby)
such a sad sitatuion all around!

I read the comments on Newsday.com and according to one poster, she has 5 kids. I don't know if it's 100% true.
The whole story is so sad. I hope the animals all get into a loving home they deserve.
