EBF and DD doesnt want to feed off breast. UPDATE: called a lactation consultant.
She used to have no problem feeding off breast, but lately shes been fighting it. She'll just scream with it in her mouth and just press down lightly. She used to do this when shes overly tired and i would just rock to sleep. But now she will only take breast at the 3:30am feeding, and doesnt feed long and goes back to sleep - so i pump the rest. Today she refuses to take at all.
I need to start building a BM supply b/c im going back to work in about 3 weeks. I cant build this supply b/c i keep using it b/c she wont feed off breast. I waste alot of BM b/c i dont know how much she will want, when she feeds off breast it doesnt matter, if she stops i can just pump. with bottle she stops you dump rest.
I think its time i just do formula, unless i can get her back to feeding off breast.. Anyone ever had this problem and were able to get DC back on breast?
UPDATE: I called a lactation specialtist, i figured my constant fming people was probable annoying sorry.. She said you can save left over BM for next feeding at room temp for up to 3 hours. She told me not to refridgerate it. And she said that to help me get DD back on breast, i should bottle feed DD skin to skin and near breast and let her explore breast and that will help her get back to the breast.. Well im willing to try anything.. she could have told me to run around the block naked lol
Oh yeah she also said like someone suggested i do.. give her bottle at first for an once or two to calm her down and then give breast for rest of feeding.

Re: EBF and DD doesnt want to feed off breast.
How old is DC?
my oldest did this when i started giving her a bottle in the beginning. With the breast they have to work harder to get milk, the bottle is easier and they start to prefer it.
I got DD back on the boob by giving her bottles less. I would give her some out of the bottle, like an ounce or two to calm her and her hunger down, then pop her on the boob.
it took a week or so for her to get back on it, then when i went back to work, it took forever to get her off the boob since I hated pumping she needed to take formula.
Whatever you decide, def do it without feeling guilty. Happy mommy=happy baby
Good luck

Are you giving her a bottle also? If so, I would stop with the bottles unless you want to wean her to formula. She might be preferring the fast flow from the bottle over the slower flow from the breast.

Re: EBF and DD doesnt want to feed off breast.
I am so sorry My dd sometimes does this. I think its because I bottle feed her sometimes and she is lazy Wants instant gratification. To help build supply when I pump I do it for an additional few minutes and I am up to 3oz a session instead of 2.
If she has bm left over I save for next feeding. Formula I throw out ASAP. try Kellymom http://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/reusing-expressedmilk.html
Goodluck..wish I was more help.

Yeah, it sounds like she likes the fast flow from the bottle better. It's really your call, but if you continue to give her the bottle, she's unlikely to go back to the breast.
It's so hard to feed these little buggers -- I had a terrible time getting my breastfed baby to take a bottle when I went back to work -- he was a total boob man. Some babies transition easily between the two, but many develop a strong preference. Good luck!

YOU ARE A GREAT MOMMY! Never ever think you are not cause you are thinking of stopping bf'ing. You gave her a gift for 5 weeks and that better than nothing, hey, I bf'd my first but didn't bf'd my second, my 2nd is on formula and doing just fine :)
Take it day by day

BM is "alive" so to speak-contains antibodies and infection protection compared to formula. I use at next feeding and toss whatever is left (if any after)

Re: EBF and DD doesnt want to feed off breast.
I would not re-use BM that has baby's saliva in it from a previous feeding. Have you looked up how much a baby of her weight and age would take in formula? I would make a bottle with a similar amount of breastmilk and maybe you could pour in some more if she wants it.
Please don't feel guilty. I wish I could have BFed for 5 weeks. I have to stop now and DS is less than 3 weeks old. I got new information about a medication I take and it was not good at all. I have a stash of pumped milk and I do not even want to use that b/c of the drug.

The amounts of expressed BM to feed a baby are different than the amounts of formula you would feed. Here is a link that explains it in detail. The average amount of BM to feed is 1 oz per hour.
I'm happy to hear that you contacted a LC. She gave very good advise. I hope everything works out for you. BFing is hard work in the beginning, but it does get easier.
PS-- The website I pulled that information off of is called kellymom.com. It has MANY useful articles relating to BFing, if you choose to continue. It has been a tremendous resource for me and many other moms on here.
