EBF one year olds...how did you get them to drink cow's milk?

I know I am going to be BFing till his 2nd b-day at this rate, but to leave the house solo, I would love the alternative of Leo giving him milk.

4 days of giving it to him in his cup, he sips, wipes his tongue and flings the cup.

I even put a little chocolate in it today to try and get it sweet, nothing.

tia!

We aren't there yet but I think if we encounter the same thing I'd try mixing cow's milk with breast milk and slowly reducing the amount of breast milk.

Not sure if you are supposed to do that but I'd probably try it.

I agree with the above. I was told to do one week mixing 3/4 my milk, 1/4 cow's milk, then the next week try 1/2 and 1/2 etc. I'm not close to doing it, so I don't know how well it works myself! Good luck! Chat Icon

I'm not BTDT or anything, but here's another thought. My DS wants to drink anything that I'm drinking. Would he also possibly want it if you're drinking it? Maybe he'd get used to the taste that way, without feeling like he has to drink it.

I don't know how long you plan on going out for, but since he's over a year maybe your DH can also offer him solids and water while you're out, if it's not for that long. Your DS could then BF once you're back.

I'm planning to BF beyond a year, probably to 2, and I was referred to some articles on kellymom.com forums. Here are some that might be helpful, if you haven't come across them yourself already.

Re: EBF one year olds...how did you get them to drink cow's milk?

thanks for the links and info.

I actually started this morning by drinking out of his sippy cup and leaving it laying on his kitchen as though it was an accidentChat Icon he ran over to it, same reaction.

I am going to pump tonight so I will use that tomorrow.

We are down to 4 feedings a day.

7 AM
1 PM
7 PM
middle of the night.

I guess I am just looking for flexibilty if I am going to continue nursing.

Leo's next day off, I am going to leave before that 1 PM feeding and leave him milk in a cup, water in another. maybe then he will drink.
thanks!

I EBF for the first year and my DD was not crazy about reg milk at the beginning but took to it pretty quick.I told her she was drinking out of a big cup like mommy.

She is 2 next month and we are still BF. I have had enough but she shows no signs of stopping....Chat Icon

no offense, but your posts make me want to cry!Chat Icon I can totally see that he is not going to stop nursing. I don't even know if I want to end it yet, but I feel like I have to create some distraction with the cows milk to get the ball rolling.

Sorry...didnt mean to make you cryChat Icon

If someone had told me 2 years ago that I would be BF past a year I would have laughed out loud. Is is hard? yes. Is it annoying to have her pulling on my "bees" all evening? yes...but she LOVES BF, she really does. I told her BF is for babies and she is a big girl and she shakes her head and cries so what can I do?

I have no advice as nothing worked for me but if you ever need an ear send me a FM.Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: EBF one year olds...how did you get them to drink cow's milk?

my situation was a little different, DD weaned herself around 11 months but didn't really like milk so I added some strawberry syrup... maybe he would like that instead of chocolate?

Eventually I just lessened the amt and she drank plain milk...

Just wanted to offer Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I stopped BF DD#1 at 29 months becuase I was 5 months preggo and just couldnt take it anymore. I was hoping she would self wean but that never happened. It was so hard for me to kinda push her away to break the habit, but looking back she doesnt even really remember and it wasnt as bad I thought! Had I not done that I think I would be BF both my DD now! LOL

My DD took cows milk in the sippy cup without too much of a problem. Hopefully when you are not there he will be more open minded

Chat Icon no I appreciate your situation. My mother says its like a bottle and one day you just are faced with getting your kid off the bottle...but really its so much more then that.

He loves it and it took everything in me to get him down to 4 a day. I almost felt mean and he did not understand.

No one I know IRL BF past 6 months...so they really don't understand the dilemma.

I think you are wonderful for sacraficing that long!
