EEEK! Mice!!

DH saw a mouse in the basement over the weekend. He's been trying to catch it, but we all know that's not going to happen. So we are both in the crawlspace last night, movign things around to make room for more storage items, and sure enough I see a mouse, that DH says was different then the one he saw. OMG!! I got out of there as quickly as possible! I don't mind mice, IF they are in a cage. Not running wild in my basement!! We have NO idea how many there are! We rent. So, what's the best type of trap to get and set up ALL ovewr the basemetn?? There's no way they can get up here, less they chew through the hardwood floors... so please don't tell me they will do that LOL. DH found a little hole in one of the windows that he swears thats how they got in. He's doing a quick fix so no more can get in. If we wait for the landlord to do it it'll prolly get done after the winter, IF at all. LOL.
Thanks...Ive never had mice, and it skeeves me out just to think about it.

Re: EEEK! Mice!!

If you DH is doing the quick fix - tell him to put brillo pads in the hole and patch it up. The mice can't chew through the brillo.

I had seen a mouse in my unfinished basement and tweeked. DH got that stuff that they eat and then go somewhere, drink water and die.

I know, it's no humane, but neither are mouse traps or the ones they stick too like a glue pad either. There is no good answer for this.

AND I have a cat....Needless to say she got told if there were anymore she would get put on the unemployment line.

Don't do the poison route since you have a baby--they can travel with the poison and leave it where your DS can get it (they can easily travel through the walls and between floors). We had 2 a few months back, and what worked best for us were the glue traps (around the edges of the floor).

Re: EEEK! Mice!!

They absolutely 100% can get up to the other floors. They climb through the walls! We always get mice around this time of year. They come in from the LIRR tracks at the end of our block and look for a warm place to live. Definitely don't do poison traps with the baby, but just as a warning, the glue traps are TERRIBLE. They work, boy do they work, but it's so sad. The glue traps are intended for the mouse's face to get stuck in the glue so he suffocates and ends it quickly. This is never the case. We recently caught 2 mice on glue traps and neither of them died quickly. They suffered for hours. I saw one on a glue trap on the morning before I left for work and I just didn't have it in me to kill him. When I got home, DH had already taken care of it- apparently the mouse was still alive and struggling when he got home from work 6 hours later. Chat Icon I felt so terrible that because I'm a big baby the mouse had to suffer that I cried. Yup, cried. Chat Icon

ETA: One good thing though- if you have mice, you definitely don't have rats! Chat Icon

They are looking for warm places - the little field mice.
What about snap traps?
Or the ones I just saw advertised on tv...like a little white house and the door shuts. Just saw the commercial on tv the other day.
Make sure you use steel wool to close up those holes.

ITA, mice do travel with poison

Glue traps. They make ones baited with "peanut butter". They do work, gotta put them along walls and under appliances, etc.

Re: EEEK! Mice!!

Ther is a humane trap that is plastic. You put PB in there or cheese. They climb in and the door shuts behind them. Then you take the trap-go at least a few blocks from your house and let them out in a field or something.

that's what I have done.

Also, cats. Best idea ever.

Bella gets them in her mouth and we capture them and take them outside.

I have a mouser!

Re: EEEK! Mice!!

we had what we assumed were field mice in our house, at least 1 or 2 that we knew of

we bought those electric field things that you plug into outlets

2 days later my cat either found or caught a mouse and left it for us at the top of our stairs

so - either it killed the mice or screwed with them enough that my cat could catch them

either way, those things work! we got it at lowes, and im sure home depot has them too Chat Icon

i normally catch them by hand LOL, yes it sounds crazy but it works. ive caught an entire family... kept them in an old 10 gallon fish tank with a lid till i was convinced i got them all. then released them as a family in the park about a mile from my house.

i also have an OOOLLDDD cage trap, PB works great as bait!

DH bought them, not me!! The first time I actually caught the mouse in my dog's food bin. I tipped it over and lured him in and then brought him outside and released him.... He came back. Chat Icon

Where can you get those humane traps? After I cried about the mouse I swore to DH I would NEVER use a glue trap again ever!

Re: EEEK! Mice!!

I've only used the humane traps. Just make sure you plug up the hole where they are coming in, otherwise they will come back.
