Double yolks happen a lot but should not be the norm and are not a sign of ideal reproduction in chickens, it's a malfunction in their system and it's nearly impossible for two chicks to survive in one shell. Often very young laying hens will produce double or triple yolks. From the moment a female chicken is hatched she has all of the ingredients that will be her lifetime of eggs inside of her, if she releases two yolks for every egg white and shell she will likely die very young of a reproductive organ disease like ovarian cancer which is very common in commercial laying hens. I'm not sure what the commercial poultry farms are like in the UK but they are mostly downright disgusting here in the US.

Kelly, these were free range eggs. We also have bad caged chicken standards, but probably not as bad as Mainland Europe from what I understand.

I'm going to guess that the farm that produced those eggs is using very young heavy breed or heritage breeds that are more commonly known for multiple yolks, its still unusual to have an entire carton. I've had my chickens for 5 years and I give a lot of eggs away but we also keep tons, I would say less than 5% are multiple yolk.
