Hang in there!!!!

They ask a TON of questions that dont really seem related to anything BUT I guess they do..(in some realm)

My daughter is 13 years old and Im still asked about my pregnancy with her and her birth. I crack up every time I read how she was "the product of a 36 week gestation" and "was delivered vaginally"...what the heck does this have to do with her problems in Math?????

DONT stress, I went through the same thing with Christopher.
They will ask you many questions such as how your pregnancy was and when you delivered.
If your child qualifies, DONT ever feel like it was somethinh YOU did. I went through the same thing.

I first wanted to say Chat Icon I quoted the above poster because I wanted to say that all the questions they ask ARE relevant. I do EI evaluations and preschool evaluations for speech and it is very important that you be as honest as possible answering these questions.FM me with any questions.Chat Icon

We just had our evaluation last week and even though they ask a TON of questions is wasn't to bad at all. Just remember everything they are asking isn't a reflection of you as a mother but to help them better help your child. My evaluator was very sweet and answered all my questions I had for her. Good luck!

I agree completely!!!!!!!!!! Although in my daughters case the nature of her delivery is irrelevant to her disability....The point I wanted to make was that while some questions dont seem pertinant to the child they may in fact BE.... (hence the "realm")

My daughter went through EI since she was 2 1/2 MONTHS old...everyone I dealt with was always amazing. Each evaluator, county worker, or teacher was always happy to answer any questions that I had....Im sure they would answer all your questions or concerns at the evaluation.

Re: E.I. Evaluation tomorrow! (I'm going crazy too!)

hi! i'm a speech therapist that did one of my internships in EI. When we do evaluations, there are so many things that go into it. and you're right, they might not seem related, but they are. for example, if shes not sleeping well, she might not be as focused during the day ( focus and being alert is very important for her learning and picking up new things). If the concern is speech, her eating habits might have something to do with her mouth muscle development ( if she doesn't like chewy foods, that could mean maybe her mouth muscles aren't strong enough to handle it).
also, things that happen during pregnancy and birth can affect the child, so we always ask about that.
i wouldn't be worried. EI is so great, and it really does make a difference when you get your child any help they might need early. good luck, and feel free to ask me any questions! Chat Icon

Well, I thought it was gonna be 30-45 days for DD to be evaluated as we were told yesterday by the social worker. Well, they called today and wants to come tomorrow!!

Now, I am feeling so nervous, because they asked me a bunch of questions over the phone - not just about speech, about her sleeping and eating habits too (which aren't excatly great). All of a sudden I feel GUILTY as if her delays are directly MY FAULT.

First of all, try to take a deep breath. Secondly, they tell you 30-45 days, b/c that is the amount of time they have, to legally complete an eval. It is GREAT news that they are on top of it, and getting it done faster. This way, if you child does qualify for services, they can start sooner!Chat Icon

Lastly, do NOT feel guilty at all. It is normal for them to ask a range of questions about your child's development b/c they are trying to determine if there is a co-morbidity issue (or simply, if he/she will need therapy in other areas, in addition to whatever concerns you have noticed or expressed). One thing to remember - even though we are with our children the most, it doesn't mean we are the best equipped to diagnose a delay or an area where our children could benefit from some help. It is NOT an accusation...it is part of their job, to be thorough and ensure the child is getting the proper help.Chat Icon
