ELA teachers...when teaching novels...
How do you usually assess the kids with the reading they do on their own? Do they have to answer questions when they do the reading at home? Do you give them reading quizzes?

Re: ELA teachers...when teaching novels...
When I taught ELA last year they did no at home reading. Unfortunatly, most of my kids were in the first percentile for reading (I taught in a selfcontained class).
Even though we (well mostly me) read aloud, I still did frequent assessment. I had them answer questions at the end of class, we did jeopardy games after every few chapters, write journal entries about the chapter, and other activities. I also stopped very frequently to assess their understanding. However, as I mentioned these kids were much lower functioning and needed this. I also gave them quizzes- usually open book.

Re: ELA teachers...when teaching novels...
Well it would be nice if the kids at my school decided to pick up a book at home when it's homework.
They don't.
However, tools I use to monitor reading:
Quick "pop" quizzes-5 short answer questions, usually graded out of 10-25 points
Each novel has a reading activity-some type of a log, or questions, or journal. These are checked daily. I like doing things that are more difficult for them to copy.
I do longer quizzes out of 50 for things that are divided into large sections (shakespeare, plays, tom sawyer, etc.)
Unit exams and a writing assignment at the end of the novel.
They also get vocab thrown in there, but that's not to check their reading, although since the words come from whatever they're reading, it usually helps.

Re: ELA teachers...when teaching novels...
When I have my students read at home which is rare, I usually don't assign a whole chapter, just a set of pages, like pages 1-6. I tell them that they will have a quiz the second they walk in the door. The next day, I'll give a short like 5 question quiz, either fill in the blank, t/f, or multiple choice immdediately as soon as the bell rings.

I do the same - or I just assign the questions with the reading assignment for homework (or in the form of some graphic organizer).
I teach ESL, however, so I rarely give independent reading. I need to teach my students how to read, comprehend and analyze literature before I can have them do it on their own.

Re: ELA teachers...when teaching novels...
I assign them a set number of pages to read, and give them discussion questions to go along with it. Then we go over the question in class and I'll usually follow them up with a quick quiz.
But I teach in a school where most of the kids actually do the reading, so I don't have to worry about it too much.

I give them a "DYR" - did you read - quiz very frequently. I ask very specific questions that they'd only know the answer to if they read.
