Elevated thyroid?
Hi there, I've been hanging out mostly on TTC, but I think it's almost time for me to transition to this board.
My daughter is a little over 2 - I went off the pill in January. Was actively NOT trying until March. Started paying attention to my cycles in May, started charting and using the Clear Blue Easy Fertility Monitor in September. So far, nothing, so I ventured to see an RE last month.
SHe's putting me through a battery of tests, and up until a few days ago everything looked GREAT - Dh got an A+ for his sperm count and motility, I got an A+ for my "marvelous" CM, my charts are perfect according to my RE, except that my luteal phase is a little on the short side (11-12 days) - it's clear from my bloodwork and from my chart that I AM ovulating, and my cycle is like clockwork - 27 or 28 days each month.
But, I got a call this week from my RE - she tested my thyroid levels because she felt something on my thyroid gland. It turns out my level was 5.95. She told me that normal range is up to 5, so it isn't TOO elevated, but elevated all the same.
My question - does anyone on here have elevated thyroid levels? What is the recommended level to maintain to conceive? What, if any, medication do you take? Any advice would be helpful, thanks!

I think 5.95 is a little high. I was diagnosed with hypothyroid (my levels were closer to 8). My endocrinologist told me that my levels should be between 2-3 especially when ttc. It might aslo go by age though, I was 32 when I first found out about the thyroid. I take synthroid and get tested every so often to make sure my levels are in check, or else they just change the dose of my synthroid. I would see an (matabolism)endocrinologist though. Hope this helps!

Re: Elevated thyroid?
Your level is a little elevated but nothing to worry about - with a little synthroid it should adjust in no time. They'll probably start you at 50 or 75mcg and within a month or two your level should be normalized. Most endos want to see your level between 2-3 when TTC/pregnant. Once you do get pregnant, you may have to up your synthroid doseage - but it's safe to take during a pregnancy.

Re: Elevated thyroid?
Thank you SO much ladies.
So, I have another question - I know I should ask my doc, but, yeah, well, it's thanksgiving
How exactly does having elevated thyroid levels interfere with your ability to conceive? I read online somewhere that it can inhibit ovulation, which clearly is not the case with me - my bloodwork is showing I AM ovulating.
Is there anything else it does to prevent conception?

Re: Elevated thyroid?
YOu may want to check to see if you are auto-immune to your thyroid.
It was discovered that I am auto-immune to my hypothryoid, which is aka Hashimotos Disease. Having autoimmune issues can be a reason for implantation failures. YOur body will confuse your healthy cells as bad cells and could prevent implantation.
Usually the fact that you might be auto-immune to your thyroid is an indicator that you *might* have other auto-immune issues.
Your doctor will likely give you synthroid and your TSH levels should be between .5-2.5.
Good Luck!!

Not only that--the thyroid regulates many body processes. Since it's responsible for your rate of metabolism, having a sluggish thyroid can really cause problems--depression and fatigue are just two of them.
Unfortunately, I'm TTC with hypothyroidism AND PCOS, so the odds are really stacked against me. But once you get your thyroid under control, you should be good to go!
