elf on the shelf?

So tonight we went to SIL's house for cake for BIL birthday. She was talking about this elf on a shelf thing that she does with her kids. She showed me the book & figure she ordered- the thing screams 1970's!!! Chat Icon DS is only 6 months, so if course we won't do it this year...but does anyone do this? Do the kids like it? It looks interesting, but I can imagine my kids getting scared at the fact that an elf is watching them all day and than going to Santa at night to report to him! LOL

We do this, its great! We named him, and he goes out after Thanksgiving. We put him in a new spot in the house everyday to show Julia he's really watching her and to be a good girl--lol Its such a cute thing to do for the kids.

Same here. We'll probably start it next year, esp. since I don't have an elf yet for this year Chat Icon

Re: elf on the shelf?

Wow I can't believe I never heard of this before! Next Christmas, at 18 months, DS will probably still be to young, but for when he is 2.5, I'm going to try it. I actually love that the elf looks like it's from 40 years ago...it looks so cute!

Re: elf on the shelf?

We did this, but in a different way. My mom told us that the "birdies" were watching us. We had a window in the kitchen and anytime a bird flew by, she would tell us that the birdies would tell Santa if we were being good. I guess it allowed her to have a scare tactic alllll year long instead of just at Christmas Chat Icon

We started it this year, about 2 weeks ago and it is working like a charm! Any time they are misbehaving, we tell them that buddy the elf is going to tell santa and then they behave. LOVE IT!

They sell them in Hallmark stores.

Oh I'm so getting this. I never really needed it before (but I've heard of it), but just wait till they hit that age where they NEVER LISTEN.

The concept is worth a million bucks.

I may buy my own elf though...

Re: elf on the shelf?

Well, you all have me sold! Chat Icon
I just ordered the elf with the book. I know Joey won't be old enough to use until the Christmas after next, but I figured I would get it now and store it in my closet just in case the price goes up than lol.
