Ending a bad habit!
Whenever we leave the house for an extended period of time, Katie likes to tear up tissues she finds in the trash.
We don't yell at her, but we do point at the tissue and ask here what that is, and she always runs away and cowers, like she knows what she did - she also doesn't run to us when we get home when she's torn up the tissue.
Is there anyway to help prevent this behavior, or are we just going to have to put all the trashcans on the table before we go out?
Thanks!

Is there a lid on the garbage can?

I would get one with a lid if it doesnt have one. And if it does have one, put a heavy book on top or something.

No lid... it's a office wastebasket.

Easy -- Put it up high until she is out of the habit.
Scolding her after the fact isn't going to help. She only knows she did something to upset you but unless you catche her in the act, don't bother scolding. It sends mixed messages...
They say the dogs aren't "bad", it's the owners who leave things in their reach who are "bad" - especially if you know she goes after it!
