enough with Palin..it's McCains turn
in this current Congress, Sen. McCain aka "the maverick" has voted with his republican party 88.3% of the times, not including the 407 (63.8%) missed votes he has racked up in this Congress alone.
compared to Barack Obama has missed 290 votes (45.5%) and voted with is party 96 % of the time (although he is not claiming to be a "maverick" within his party)
I looked this up b/c I heard some things about Obama compaigning since he took office and such and not doing anything. I wanted to see exactly how much he missed...and discovered that McCain in fact has missed more and is the Senatorial leader in missed votes...haters don't fear, Obama AND CLinton AND Biden are also on the list )
I am really curious though, how McCain can distance himself from the Party when he votes WITH them the clear majority of the time (I give him cred for voting FOR stem cell research and gay marriage...but that's what he's got palin for now lol) linky
tomorrow we can take on Obama's voting record.

BUT...McCain has been a senator longer, so he would have missed more votes than Obama.

Re: enough with Palin..it's McCains turn
Just for further clarification of the dates on this:
We are currently in the 110th Congress. It began on 1/3/07 and will end 1/2/09.
Most of the presidential candidates announced beginning the weekend of the MLK Jr Holiday in 2007, so roughly 1/15/07.

But how many of Obama's votes were not a no or a yes just "present"? (which is more of a cop-out vote.

Re: enough with Palin..it's McCains turn
That problem with numbers is that they do not always tell the entire picture. Of all the resolutions voted on that make up that number there were only 31 issues that "mattered" (meaning it was not a resolution to make July national watermelon month, or name a post office etc). So of those 31 he voted with the republican party 21 times, but of those 21 times 7 of those were unanimous (reps and dems). This leaves 14 out of 31 votes, that weren't unanimous, where he sided with the republicans.

you tell me
i've been looking through and it doesn't seem like you can vote present...though maybe not voting stands for that...which would make mcCain just as guilty.

Re: enough with Palin..it's McCains turn
It was an actual question. The articles I find seem to be in regards to years past.
My understanding is you can vote present.

really...looking at it, it doesn't jump out at me that he's going against the grain.

That is correct. You cannot vote present. You must vote yes, no, or not vote at all. There is no voting by proxy on the Senate floor, though there is in Senate Committees.

That is incorrect. You cannot vote "present" in the United States Senate.
There are several state legislatures that allow you to do this, including Illinois, where Obama was a member of the State Senate.

I wasn't being snarky...I was serious b/c I am having trouble figuring that whole thing out myself
if you look at the dates, there are some dates that have a vote of yes/not and a vote of no vote for the same day.
perhaps that's where this "present" theory is coming from.
again...if it came across wrong, it wasn't my intention

This link gives you what Obama's position/vote was in the first column (and in many of these that he did not vote), next column is how the majority of the Republicans voted, and last column on the right is how the majority of the Democrats voted.

Re: enough with Palin..it's McCains turn
Interesting. Thanks for posting.
I'm looking forward to hearing McCain tonight. I've heard very little from him about what he plans to do, especially for our economy, so I'm curious to see if he will reveal all tonight or continue to attack, attack, attack.
