Palin's passport
Really interested to see what people think about her not having had a passport until 2007.
Is it bad? Or do people really not care?

Re: Palin's passport
I really don't care. Maybe money was tight for them and international travel wasn't possible.
I think it's kind of silly to say that b/c she isn't well traveled internationally she's not going to be able to handle herself on the international stage. I don't think that just because someone took a Perillo Tour of Italy they would be better equipped to handle the job.

Re: Palin's passport
I don't think it would make me vote or not vote for her--but I am of the mind that everyone should travel outside the U.S. at least one time and get a stamp in the passport. Traveling the world sometimes gives you both a better appreciation of where you come from as well as a TRUE understanding of how the world views our country.

Re: Palin's passport
I guess it is weird trying to be a world figure, but for the leader of a sparsely populated state, not so weird.
And this tidbit would not affect my opinion of her.

Me either. My DH has a very good friend that is over 40, has never been out of the country and does not have a passport.

I find it interesting that the Observer on Sunday in the UK reported that Palin has only been outside the US once - to Ireland - when she has also been to Iraq.
ETA: Not a supporter. Just stating that the media isn't always right.

Re: Palin's passport
I have a passport--it hasn't been used in 5 years. And I only have 2 kids.
She has 5 - its gonna be along while before she travels!
And I can't believe the press actually dug that up to use as material against her

Re: Palin's passport
It doesn't really matter to me.
As long as she is respectful to people of other cultures and has the basic knowledge of how to deal with them, it shouldn't matter.
Altough as a travel lover, I am finding it suprising to learn how many older adults have never travelled outside the US.

Re: Palin's passport
i don't think it's a huge deal considering that two-thirds of congress does NOT have a passport (this was according to an article i read in the Times about 5 years ago). Most of the idiots in Washington have never left America anyway.

ITA. Though coming from a place as far away as AK, even traveling to different parts of our own country that don't require a passport would've been eye-opening.

eh. I didn't have a passport until right before our wedding so we could go on our honeymoon. it's not significant enough to make it an issue.

I've read that she went to Kuwait and Germany - but yes, have no idea what is exactly the truth other than what's reported in the media.
I'm really surprised no one has much isseu with this. I am always trying to defend the "only 10% of Americans hold passports" statistic that Europeans love to throw at me. I totally understand that travel could be a hardship and gets more difficutl depending on your geographic location within America, but I really think someone who intends to be a main representative of the country should get out a bit more...I just think she needs to look outward a bit. Re: Palin's passport
I don't think it breaks her as a candidate (not voting for her anyway and still wouldn't even if she had travelled all over the world), but it makes her view of the world narrow IMO. Travelling around the world is valuable as a PP said, to help you understand other countries/cultures and better appreciate our own. I don't condemn her for not travelling before last year, but given the office she is considering, it does have a small impact.
I would be interested to hear how much of the U.S. she has seen before the campaign. I know she went to school in Idaho and lives in Alaska, but if I heard she had barely travelled around the U.S. or Canada, that would lower my opinion more.

I'm addressing the 10% fact. If you live in the UK, you can go to Paris in a heartbeat. It's like going to Florida or even someplace closer. You need a passport to to from the UK to France, you don't to go from NY to Florida.
