Re: Epidural Q for BTDT Moms
Posted by Erlifried
Thanks for all of your input. It definitely sounds like a decision i can only make when i'm in the heat of the moment.
I am 37 weeks pregnant and i still have time to talk to my DH about it but i am glad that i found out what i did yesterday. The woman who ran the course that i went to had two totally natural births so naturally she is going to convince anyone that she can to skip the epidural. She was big into laboring as much at home as possible with music playing and massages from the dad. We'll see....
Thanks for all of your responses. I have a lot to think about now!!!
My Bradley instructor was the same way and my midwives were going to try to help me do it without the epi but my water broke and my contractions didn't start on their own and I was GBS posiitive so they wanted the baby out. Since my body wasn't progressing, I needed an epi to let my body relax. I went for a while without it and the back labor contractoions coming 2-3 minutes apart were unbearable after a a few hours.
I do believe in waiting until you are in the moment. I was against the epi and even in pain I wanted to try to work through it and my midwife told me I needed it. I think had I been more stubborn I would have needed a C-section because even if I made it through the contractions, would I have had energy to push?
See what happens with your labor. The midwives I used all said that you need to be flexible about your birth plan. If your labor is 8 hours, you might be able to go without it. If it is 20 hours, don't be ashamed to use it.

My epi was never turned down or turned off while I pushed. I did end up pushing for 3 hours, but my doc said he never felt the need to have it turned down becuase I certainly could feel the pressure to push AND I was pushing great. She was just a little stubborn in wanting to come out. I would do it all again the same way if I have a 3rd.
Mine too! never down or off.... the Dr. just said that if I was making progress and pushing well, he wouldn't have to do that, and believe me, I tried my hardest to push well! I pushed for 1 hr. NEVER felt any pain!
My friend told me when you push, try to push like you are trying to get the biggest cr@p out of you... worked for me

Re: Epidural Q for BTDT Moms
I much prefer the thought of a catheter in my back then the agony of back labor for 12 hours!!!!!!!!! To each her own, but honestly it was nothing. the contractions i was having while they were putting the epi in were far worse. (just dont' watch them do it ;)) and by the time I was ready to push I felt nothing. Nothing!! It was wonderful!! I was extremely nervous about it too - I went in thinking I may or may not get it and I am SO glad I did!
They turned it down, but not off (at my request - the look of panic on my face must have worked) and I only pushed for 45 minutes.
