Re: Ethnic names you wish you could use....

I am half Greek! Woo Hooo! And I LOVE the name Athena! I just can't sell my FH on the name. I think I may be able to get it as a middle name.

I love most Greek names. Maybe it is in the blood.

Maybe I'm the odd one out, but I would use any name that Dh and I liked - no matter what the ethnicity.

Me too. I don't think it matters what your last name is. If you like a name, then I don't see why you shouldn't use it. This happens all the time!

I want to use Isabelle or Isabella if we have a girl but DH says it's too ethnic. It's an Italian name and we're not.

I completely agree. We have an irish last name and I like pairing it with an italian first name...breaks it up a little. Chat Icon

We are jewish, and my sister is much more relgious then I am. She said when she gets pregnant again and if she has a girl, that's the name she's going to use. My grandfather's name was Yizack. She is planning on using Isabelle/a to name her after our grandfather.

I love the name Gabriella, Gaby for short but with our Scottish/Irish last name it would sound rediculous.

That was the problem when my nephew was born last year. My father and grandfather have the same hebrew name (my grandfather was my dads step father), so because of that they couldn't name the baby after him since my father is still with us. But if they had/have a girl next, they are allowed to name her after my grandfather because it would be a girl and it doesn't count.

Re: Ethnic names you wish you could use....

Our last name is very Russian. It is butchered on a daily basis. Anyone who actually takes the time to read it phonetically should in theory be able to get it - assuming you have made it past the third grade. That being said, we didn't want to take chances and have people butcher her first name too. We chose a name from the Old Testament for both her first and middle name so she didn't have to go through life correcting people.

ETA:
We are Jewish too. We chose names in English that we liked. We will be naming for my father and DH's grandfather (using feminine equivalents since we are having a girl) in Hebrew. In addition, due to the recent passing of my mother, we are giving our daughter a second Hebrew middle name in honor of her. The Hebrew name is actually where the honor is and DOES NOT have to correspond with an English initial though many do it that way.

Re: Ethnic names you wish you could use....

Our last name is very Irish/Scottish and awkward sounding. Very few names sound good paired with it. My best bet is to go with Irish sounding names. Everything else sounds ridiculous.

Re: Ethnic names you wish you could use....

I am Polish and English witha smal smidge of German, but Joe 100% German...he wants to name our son Friz. I do like the name I just worry about how he would be treated. I suggested Fredrick and Fritz for short but it was a no-go......Do you think Fritz is a name that people say oh how unique or a name that says your about to get your lunch money stolen and a wedgie all before 1st period?

I personally like Frederick better with Fritz as a nickname!! Buts thats JMO!! I personally wouldn't stress about it too much just yet...you never know you might have all girls (and then you wasted all this time stressing over it). Or you could have a boy and he can come out looking NOTHIN like a Fritz! GOOD LUCK! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Ethnic names you wish you could use....

We have an italian last name and stayed away from italian first names, but I really like Isabella.

On the flip side, DH likes some really Irish names like Erin which sounds really dumb with our last name IMO....
