Re: Ethnic names you wish you could use....
I am first generation Irish and grew up with a very "American" first name and an Irish last name, but not a common one. My siblings and I were quite different from our cousins and friends whose parents were also from ireland because we were the onyl oens that didnt' have Irish names like Siobhan, Aidan, Daragh, etc. I married an Irish-Italian American who has a very Irish first name and a very Italian last name that NO ONE except Italians from Italy pronounce correctly.
We decided we ar eprobably goign to go with Irish first names. Although it sounds weird with the Italian last name, my husband did it that way and he survived.
For a girl, we've already decided on Mairead.
Italian names I like are: Paulo Francesco/a Guiliana Gianna Giovanni
Unfortunately, most of these are already in the family, so I doubt we'll use them.

I have almost the exact same situation as you! I am 1st generation Irish, have a VERY commone and popular American first name and an uncommon Irish maiden name.. My DH is from Ireland and my new last name is very common there... we're thinking of all very irish names for our kids... I love Maeve, Aisling and Sinead Declan Fionn Colm
ps- Mairead was my Granny's name...love it!

I guess I'm in a similar boat. I'm first generation. My first name is Irish and my maiden name is a very common Irish name.
My DH is spanish. My married name is VERY spanish. I didn't want DS to identify be identified with only with his spanish heritage so we named him Aidan . It doesn't match his very spanish last name, but I don't care. I wanted to break it up a bit.
Other ethnic names I love are Aine, Roisin and Siobhan

Re: Ethnic names you wish you could use....
I love ethnic names but DH does not. I grew up with a very ethnic Italian last name, while DH is Irish/German and so our last name is simple. I think that having an "ethic" name, gives them a part of me, celebrates both my DH and I. I do not know if he will buy into that. Aside from that I have had my first sons name picked out for years. A name is a name, so whatever you like you should name your child.

Re: Ethnic names you wish you could use....
Since I took DH's Puerto Rican last name, I wanted to use a very Irish first name, but we're finding out that most don't work together very well...
My favorite boy name is Aidan Patrick, but I'm not sure how well it goes with Rivera. I think it just sounds confused.

I want to use Isabelle or Isabella if we have a girl but DH says it's too ethnic. It's an Italian name and we're not.
DH and I have an Italian last name and Isabella is one of our girl's names.
