Etiquette question about edible, or rather drinkable, birthday gifts...
We all know that whenever a bottle of liquor or an edible item is brought to a house for a party and presented to the hosts it is good manners to immediately put it on the dinner table.
However, what do you think is suppose to happen when people are coming for a birthday party to someone's home and are giving the birthday boy a bottle of rum as a birthday gift. (He is known to enjoy rum so it is definitely a thoughtful gift.)
Should he put it on the table for everyone to partake in or should he put it aside for himself because it was actually his birthday gift, not a hostess/host gift?
Feel free to vote in my poll or/and comment!

There was a thread on this recently. The birthday boy should do whatever he wants to do since it was a gift.

Who cares?
In my circle, the edible/drinkable gift is offered to other guests. Usually, liquor or food is given so ALL can enjoy it together. Works for us. I personally would never accept a bottle of liquor and say, "Hey thanks," and put it away. I'd be like, "Lets get drunk!"
But thats just me

I agree... if its just a party for no reason then they should put it out because thats generally what it was brought for...
you wouldnt expect them to share the rest of their bday gifts...lol

Re: Etiquette question about edible, or rather drinkable, birthday gifts...
Its up to the birthday person if they want to put it out or not
sometimes i've received a bottle gift and wanted to keep it to enjoy myself (knowing if i put it out, it would probably be 1/2 gone) other times i've added it to the general mix of bottles available for the party
i know as a gift giver.. if i take the time to buy something for the specific person and its something i know they personally like (like a certain brand or flavor of something) then i'd rather they keep it for themselves. But its really up to the recipient on what they do with it

Whatever the recipient wants.
One year my aunt had a bunch of people over for Christmas Eve and one of her friends walked in with a bottle of wine that was supposed to be a gift for my aunt. Her friend took the bottle into the kitchen, opened it, poured herself a glass and then hid the rest of the bottle somewhere in my aunt's room. All night we kept watching her walk toward the bedrooms with an empty glass and walk out with a full one. It's been years and we all still laugh about that one.

Actually technically it is nice if the host puts the bottle of wine out but it is not required. Unless it is a pot luck you are bringing a gift to say thank you for inviting me so the host doesn't have to put it out. I always do but in law school one of our teachers was telling us a story - that in some parts of the country it is actually rude to bring cookies or wine b.c it implies that the host doesn't know how to throw a proper party and you assume that they won't have those items available for their guests.
To answer your question - No if I bring a gift to someone I don't expect that they open it to share with me.

I say it should be given to the birthday person and they can decide when they want to open it. If they choose to share, great! If not, sucks for everyone else

I'd say whatever the birthday boy wants to do. I don't think it matters either way.

For something like rum, put aside. Things like wine and champagne, I feel like that's more for everyone to enjoy.

I have to say that if it was meant as a gift for the birthday boy then it's to be for them alone.
If it was brought as a host/hostess gift that should be made available for everyone to enjoy.

Re: Etiquette question about edible, or rather drinkable, birthday gifts...
I think when alcohol(hard liquor or wine) is brought its not expected to be opened up - unless the host has specifically asked you to bring wine for the party....
Dessert things(which can expire) I expect to be opened up - its more of a gift for the host, not so much a bday gift.
