Etiquette question (BRU registry-related)

We started our registry yesterday, and were informed that BRU is changing their return policy in August--if you don't have a receipt or a gift receipt, they won't let you return it!!! Chat Icon

Ok, so here's my question: Would it be rude to ask shower guests to provide a gift receipt? I worked at BRU for many years while I was in high school/college, and I did SOOOO many returns for ladies who had had their shower the day before, and didn't have any receipts. We could return them back then, and many of them walked away with a merchandise credit for like, $500.

I'm just afraid to get stuck with all sorts of stuff that we can't use... Chat Icon

I think its kind of rude but also necessary. I can't imagine this policy- I had so many doubles the last time and NO reciepts.Chat Icon

Re: Etiquette question (BRU registry-related)

IMO, not rude at all. Kind of a necessary evil. WE got recepits for most everything, the big ticket items, I mean. The small stuff, no, but it wasn't a big deal.

I would just have your Mom or MIL or whoever is hosting your shower to spread the word. Chat Icon

Yup..it is the same policy now as Toys R Us.

To the OP..I would consider registering at BBB. They will take back anything if it is from their store because they do not give out gift receipts. You will also get the store. Even if you ask the guests to provide the GR you can't gaurentee you will get it.

I think BRU is going to loose business because of this

BRU is pretty much our only option--we don't have BBB in NC.

I am so over BRU, that is ridiculous. I do hope they lose business over this. Thanks for the heads up, we have some things to return and now I know we need to do it in the next month.

Yeah. it's a pain. I can definitely see having this policy at TRU, but at BRU it just doesn't make sense.

They said that they will return any item that was purchased from your registry without a receipt, but people always do that whole "well, I like this one better so that's the one I'll buy" type thing. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I think we're going to have to put an insert in the shower invites that politely states to please request a gift receipt. What a royal pain. Chat Icon

I don't think that's right at all!!!!

So, now if I get gifts from them that I do not want or that was a double....if I don't have the GR I can't return it.

Ridiculous!!!

I was really looking forward to registering with them, now not so much!!

Ugh!! Yet another reason to hate BRU! From the long lines, rude and unhelpful staff and now to this nonsense?? Thank goodness I can register at BBB! It totally sucks that there isn't one in NC! Chat Icon

Though it stinks, I am willing to bet that there is a reason for doing this. You would be surprised what kinds of things, used and unused that people try to return.

true - and as a PP said, as long as it is on your registry, you can still return it for store credit.

if it's something that you don't want and can't return, just go to the BRU website, put it on your registry, and then go to the store to return it.

See, I thought that, too...but can you alter your registry to show that one has been purchased? Otherwise it's going to show that it wasn't bought... Chat Icon

Re: Etiquette question (BRU registry-related)

I would include maybe a little card, to your guests, that since you are OOS, to please include reciepts with the gift to make things easier...in case something has to be returned or exchanged.

So in other words I don't think its rude at all.

This policy does not make sense once you have it on your registry I don't see the problem in returning it.

Re: Etiquette question (BRU registry-related)

I would suggest putting something like "please be sure to get a gift recpt, items cannot be returned or exchanged without one" on the registry.

You can add it up on top, so when people look online, or print it in the store, it will be on the first page they see.

Re: Etiquette question (BRU registry-related)

I personally think it's rude. It's like saying.."I may not like your gift enough to keep it." If they are buying off a registry, you shouldn't get duplicates anyway if they are telling the clerk it's off a registry. Almost every store I can think of requires a receipt to return even just for store credit, so I really wouldn't expect BRU to be any different.

The only reason I'd like to try to get the receipts is because--well--to put it nicely, some people don't understand, or maybe don't really care about the idea of a registry. When we got married, we got SO many duplicate items, because people bought off the registry, but never thought to tell the cashier that it was FROM a registry. Or better yet, they look at the registry, but take it upon themselves to say "Oh, she doesn't really want this one, this one is so much better, so I'll buy this one instead" and then you wind up with things that you won't use.

I worked at BRU for 5 years, I've seen how this whole thing goes down. I just can't believe they used to make me hunt down SKU numbers and find prices for things without the receipt, and now that it's MY turn to register, they won't do the same for me! Chat Icon Chat Icon

They don't always take things off the registry even if you DO tell them it is from a registry. I've seen it happen.

Exactly...I received doubles at my shower.
Also, sometimes you might put something on your registry and then later on change your mind about it or maybe something could be broken. I returned a bunch of things from my shower.

Maybe you could let your mom and MIL know and they could spread the word about the receipts to your family. Is it a surprise shower? If so, when people RSVP to the person giving it they could tell them.

People had problems with my registry and they made sure to tell them to take it off.. and the Registry system was down so the things werent taken off and I got doubles. Maybe if BRU can guarantee there registry doesnt go down so often people wont get doubles.

I dont see a problem with asking for a GR.

Re: Etiquette question (BRU registry-related)

Personally, I wouldn't do it. However, I will probably have a little shower anyway, so I doubt I would get too many duplicates and if someone gets me something that isn't on my registry, I will just grin and bear it. Chat Icon But you have to do what is best for you.

this is exactly what i was going to say. sometimes stuff just doesn't come off the registry, how are they going to know it wasn't a computer error?
