Evaluated for Speech services and they said no!
My nephew was evaluated for his speech. He is 18mo's and has no words. They came did the evaluation and said he is definetely speech delayed but because his comprehension score was high he doesn't qualify for services. What should my sister do now?? So frustrating that he needs help with speech but can't get it. Thanks!

2 choices:
1. start theraphy on their own 2. Have him re-evaluated by the state in 3 months
good luck

you can have him re-evaluated in 3 months. DS was approved at 18 months but he wasn't great in other fields. i know my niece got turned down and was speech delayed because comprehension wise she was above the average

It's difficult to get approved for speech services at age 18 months, especially if 1) no other delays are present and 2) if the problem is just with expressive speech and the child's receptive speech is fine.
Like others said, you could start private therapy now and get the child re-evaluated at 2, when the standards are a bit different and it's easier to get services for speech only.

the trick i was told was to have the child evaluated for more than 1 thing so that even if their overall score for 1 is high, maybe the others will bring it down. you need a 33% delay for 1 area or 25% delay in 2 areas.

This is true. Maybe they can do it privately??

Re: Evaluated for Speech services and they said no!
If your sister feels he needs services she should contact the EI coordinator and ask for another evaluation.
Did she get the report yet? Reading where his strengths and weaknesses are will help her argue her case.
DD gets PT and OT that started when she was 3 through CPSE.
I had her evaluated at 18 months, she was 1.87 standard deviations below average for her gross motor skills. It takes 2 standard deviations to get services in one area. I thought what I did was best and continued to get evals every 3-6 months. She continued to just miss qualifying. I have learned a lot since and wish I fought harder to get her EI. I have learned to be a better advocate for her and not to take no for an answer when I feel she needs something.
Once she hit 3 I went into the CPSE eval process ready to really fight but when they saw that she has above average intelligence and understands and tries to do what is requested of her during evals it raises her score artificially. They said she should have been getting services all along and gave us exactly what I wanted.

I agree with the pp about having DC evaluated again in 3 months if your sister feels that DC is still delayed. In the meantime, is your sister near CW Post? They have an AMAZING mommy and me program in their speech and language department. It's for kids with speech delays, whether or not they receive services. If your want more info, send me an fm! GL

there is no trick.
with a speech eval, they still look at the overall child. a special ed teacher still comes and evaluates the child. for speech, both receptive and expressive typically need to be delayed significantly.

Re: Evaluated for Speech services and they said no!
The same thing happened with my nephew. They gave my sister a list of milestones he should have at 2 yo and to call if he hadn't reached them. Low and behold, at 2 he then qualified. So long s the hearing checks out ok, there isn't much more she can do, except wait. As PP said, she can try her private insurance and see about getting him some services. Oh and within 3 mos of speech therapy my nephew was a chatterbox, LOL!!

Re: Evaluated for Speech services and they said no!
DS was evaluated at 22 months (should've just waited) and didn't qualify. called right after his 2nd b-day, did a re-eval, and he qualified. He's been getting speech for 6months and barely re-qualified to continue sevices. His overall language score is barely in the below average range. Now I'm nervous he won't qualify for CPSE.

It's like anything esle. 1. Find out if they have coverage for the service 2. If a referral is needed, get one from primary MD 3. Find a provider that takes the insurance 4. Co pays will be at each session which can be a PITA but hey, still cheaper than payig OOP!

My son's PT is through insurance, and not EI. It's $35 a visit, as the therapist is considered a specialist. I think we are limited to 60 visits a year, but the pediatrician does have to update the Rx on regular intervals.
