Sounds like a good idea to keep a nice piece of clothing in closet circulation....one question....do you think the dye would come off on your skin, or where it rubs on your pants? I always remember dyable shoes leave dye on my feet

and VS doesn't have this one anymore :( it's been 3 years but still

Re: ever dye a piece of clothing you ruined?
I googled it
it seems pretty easy
I will test it and take pics
it says white is the best color to do this with- so that's a plus

Re: ever dye a piece of clothing you ruined?
I'm just curious what the stain is, I'd be afraid it would show through the dye as an oil spot or something.

True...tie dye never really came off....ya might as well go for it! Yes and show us/tell us how it comes out! Then buy the replacements to make you feel better if it doesn't turn out the way you want

no- it's not oil
it's a discloration not really a stain in the arm pit
I don't think it will show thru

You can use Rit dye...they have it at Kmart, Walmart, Michaels, AC Moore, even Stop and Shop. I haven't dyed anything that was knit, but I've done tons of woven fabrics.

Re: ever dye a piece of clothing you ruined?
I have never done it but thought about it- but my mom once advised against using black because it's hard to get a really saturated shade. Though that was a long time ago and I am sure dyes are better now. But I'd still read reviews before you choose a dye- it would be a shame to put in the effort and have a bad result.

Re: ever dye a piece of clothing you ruined?
I have. it's difficult to get a dark shade, so you may have to leave it for a while. or do it multiple times. And, rinse rinse rinse the garment when you are finished. Until the water comes clear. You will have to rinse a lot. then wash it. then done.
You can find pretty simple directions online. It's not difficult...just a PITA.

Re: ever dye a piece of clothing you ruined?
i think you need that dye called RIT. its made in all sorts of colors.
i remember when wedding planning girls were using it to dye their crinolines. Is it a super sensitive material..like cashmere? there should be instrux on the box regarding materials, but it sounds like a good plan

Rit dye
You can dye the dress in a pot on the stove or in the washing machine.
If you do it on the stove, after you dye it for the specified time, rinse it and then wash it (I *think* that's the process). That way, you shouldn't have any excess dye come off on your skin or other clothing when wearing the dress.

Re: ever dye a piece of clothing you ruined?
I dyed all sorts of things when I was in college, did lots of tye dying, etc. What is the dress made of? I tried several tricks to get the clothing not to run in the wash. My favorites were to iron the item with a very hot iron to seal in the dye, then wash it by itself the first few times and after you dye something you might even want to run the washing machine with nothing in it just to get the dye out of the machine before you put any of your other clothing in.
I have a portable washing machine from my old apartment and my DH wants to set it up for me to tie dye things again. The main reason that I stopped doing it is that I found that the dye from the first washing stays in the machine and can ruin later loads. Luckily, I did a lot of this at my parents' house and my dad is color blind so he did not know that his T-shirts ended up matching mine.

Before you start dying have you tried this stuff?
It is amazing!!! I saved a dress after spilling red wine all over it. I would definitely give it a try.
