everyone OK w/ the school budget results?

FH's employer passed, therefore, he HAS A JOB for september Chat Icon

My home district passed (there wasn't much change in the budget), but all of our surrounding schools except for 1, failed.

Hope everyone got what they wanted - ESPECIALLY if you're in the Sachem area!

here's the link to all results

Thanks for this!
My district passed as well, which I'm happy about. Yeah, the taxes will go up alittle, but it's worth it to me.

did you get the flyer where the numbers showed a 9% increase?? I read it and re-read it and it was a 9% increase over last years (which was 9%) so therefore still an 18% increase!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: everyone OK w/ the school budget results?

I already spoke to my district this morning. They are undecided right now as to what they're going to do. They're either going to put up the same budget for revote (I guess trying to lure the parents who would've voted yes but didn't vote at all out of the woodwork) or else put up a revised one. If they revise it, they don't know yet what they're cutting out to lower the tax increase.

You're 100% correct. If the price of home doesn't kill you, the annual taxes will.

Re: everyone OK w/ the school budget results?

I was upset that mine didn't pass. When you have your kids in a school district that fails most of it's school budget votes is hard.I know that taxes will rise but the education of my child is very important.

I agree with you - the education of the kids is the #1 priority. However, there seems to be more and more spending that's not related to direct education. If the population of a school stays flat, why the 10% increases year after year? That's much higher than the average growth rate of the economy in one year.

I totally agree. It seems like the money isn't applied where it needs to be. It's sad because in some schools are 25-30 kids per class rooms. That's crazy, but when budgets are approved I don't seem to see a big difference. How about we run for office? Chat Icon

Re: everyone OK w/ the school budget results?

I 100% agree that the education of children is very important. However there are a few things that really bother me. We don't have any kids and don't plan on having any but yet we have to pay the same school taxes as the guy who lives next to me with 3 kids. I don't think its fair that we have to pay for medical and retirement expenses for school employees after all no one pays for mine. Infact I am making less than I did last year b/c our medical went up. And what about the people who send their kids to school but do not pay a singe dime for school taxes. Sorry I had to vent but this really bothers me.

Re: everyone OK w/ the school budget results?

It is a hard balance. We are in a School district which I do not like. So we pay taxes and tuition. I know it is a personal decision but when your taxes are 10K a yr you would think you could use the school district.

Agreed! And what about retirees who are struggling to get by as it is...why should they pasy the same amount especially since none of their children ever utilized the public schools, as in my parents case!

All kidding aside, I've actually thought about it. I have too much going on now, but perhaps in a few years I'm really considering it. In my district, there was a surplus this past year, yet that money is going to be put into "reserve". If there's a surplus, I should be getting a refund check in the mail. I know general elections are important, especially for President and Congress, but this election has the most direct impact on our lives.

Re: everyone OK w/ the school budget results?

The thing is most retirees at one time had children that used the schools, and without the entire community paying taxes, their education would have been awful.

My Mom and step-father no longer have children in school, haven't for 5 years, but when they moved my mom made sure they bought in a good school district, so that the house would be eaiser to sell in the future.

I may not have any children now, but I plan to in the future, and I want them to have a good school district, with an educated staff and updated facilities to attend. And if that means an increase in taxes, then so be it.
