I totally agree. It seems like the money isn't applied where it needs to be. It's sad because in some schools are 25-30 kids per class rooms. That's crazy, but when budgets are approved I don't seem to see a big difference. How about we run for office? Chat Icon

All kidding aside, I've actually thought about it. I have too much going on now, but perhaps in a few years I'm really considering it. In my district, there was a surplus this past year, yet that money is going to be put into "reserve". If there's a surplus, I should be getting a refund check in the mail. I know general elections are important, especially for President and Congress, but this election has the most direct impact on our lives.

I know what you mean. If there is surplus then give some of that money back. The truth is I feel guilty because I couldn't vote yesterday. My daughter is 5 and she asked me if I had voted and I had to say no. I try to be very involved in what goes on in my community since in the end it's something will affect us in one way or another.

They will minimally "revise" the budget but if it doesn't pass again, it goes to a contingency budget which sometimes can be MORE than the actual initial budget.

I didn't vote. I'm so sick of the S/D's scandals, etc. I can understand certain increases but 18%??? That's madness.Chat Icon

I 100% agree that the education of children is very important. However there are a few things that really bother me. We don't have any kids and don't plan on having any but yet we have to pay the same school taxes as the guy who lives next to me with 3 kids. I don't think its fair that we have to pay for medical and retirement expenses for school employees after all no one pays for mine. Infact I am making less than I did last year b/c our medical went up. And what about the people who send their kids to school but do not pay a singe dime for school taxes. Sorry I had to vent but this really bothers me.

This is what is happening in P/M...the enrollment keeps going up but the numbers don't jive with house sales and new construction. When you have illegals packing 15-20 people in a house, four to a room or more, who is contributing the tax rolls for all these kids?? The homeowner who owns the house is only paying HIS portion of the taxes, not for the 20 or so odd people living in his place!Chat Icon

As for running for office, I'm gunning for Patricia Eddington's job...she is just worthless all around. Did anyone see her recently on the At Issue on New's 12 concerning the pedophiles?

The thing is most retirees at one time had children that used the schools, and without the entire community paying taxes, their education would have been awful.

My Mom and step-father no longer have children in school, haven't for 5 years, but when they moved my mom made sure they bought in a good school district, so that the house would be eaiser to sell in the future.

I may not have any children now, but I plan to in the future, and I want them to have a good school district, with an educated staff and updated facilities to attend. And if that means an increase in taxes, then so be it.

It's a tough balancing act. I believe in getting the best value for your dollar. I'm the first person to say "you get what you pay for". I can understand increasing taxes to maintain high education levels. However, when one is hit with double digit tax increases for three years straight it makes me wonder where all this money is going. The increase value in the home and it's location may be offset by the unattractive tax bill that goes along with it.

I try to stay involved as well - even if it's just reading the local papers once a week to get a pulse for what's going on.

Wow - why have an initial vote then?

I was upset that mine didn't pass. When you have your kids in a school district that fails most of it's school budget votes is hard.I know that taxes will rise but the education of my child is very important.

true but if we can't afford to live there..the education the SD provides won't matter

They can't just impose whatever amount they want on the taxpayers so they make it look like it's a democratic process by having the vote...then they slam you anyway even if you say no...it's such b.s. Seriously, look into what districts failed 2x last year and then look at their contingency budgets?? Not much difference...Seaford is a good example of this.

It's not an easy thing to deal with especailly on Long Island. That's why I'm moving out of state. Honestly I can't afford to live here any longer. I don't want to go but taxes & the school district my daughter is in are forcing us to leave.

Can people who do not have kids in their s/d get involved with the school budget? How do you go about that?

Re: everyone OK w/ the school budget results?

Sorry I should have been clearer. Who decides the budget? Do I as a person with no kids get to help the s/d with the budget? Is there a board?

I believe the board is responsible for coming up with the budget.

My good friend who lives in P/M was telling me about the illegals and how it's unfair they are getting educated on his dime. He's actually thinking about moving out of the district.
