expect to gain weight, you are growing a baby

HOW YOUR WEIGHT ADDS UP
Baby – 7½ pounds
Enlargement of uterus – 2 pounds
Placenta – 1½ pounds
Amniotic fluid – 2 pounds
Breast enlargement – 2 pounds
Extra blood and fluid volume – 8 pounds
Extra fat stores – 7 pounds
Total – 30 pounds

. Q. How fast should I put on weight?

A. The healthy rate of weight gain should be:

First trimester:
4 pounds during the first trimester. If underweight, add 1 pound. If overweight, subtract 1 pound.

Second & Third Trimester :
1 pound per week. Add ¼ pound if underweight. Subtract ¼ pound if overweight.

Most women gain weight during the second trimester, which coincides with the period of most rapid weight gain of baby (from 1 ounce to 2 pounds). It's not abnormal to bounce up 5 to 10 pounds quickly between 15 and 20 weeks of pregnancy. Most babies gain 90 percent of their weight after the fifth month, and 50 percent of their weight in the last two months.
During the last month, it's normal to gain less even though baby is still gaining. Average weight gain is 1-2 pounds, although that can vary.

I've become so much more hungry again today, and I'm exactly 18 weeks now! I guess it's understandable. Chat Icon

Thanks for the breakdown! My doctor never talks about weight at all at my appointments. I guess he's just not worried about it. I'm up about 7 lbs total the entire pregnancy now at 18 w. At least I finally have a bit of a belly.

Funny thing, my belly I see isn't where the baby is! It's above it! I keep telling DH it's because the baby is pushing the rest of my internal organs up so that's why my bump is up higher than where the baby is.

Re: expect to gain weight, you are growing a baby

I think I might be the only one that likes gaining weight during this pregnancy. As long as I am not gaining too much too fast and am around the suggested weight gain for my time frame I am happy. It means the baby is growing and I am doing what I am supposed to be doing!

The only thing that makes me feel like a fat cow are my boobs. I hate them. They make me feel like I have a huge back & no shirts fit right anymore.. but those I can do nothing about so I better get used to it!

edited for spelling

Re: expect to gain weight, you are growing a baby

I'm almost 12 weeks and have gained about one pound, but I feel like I have all my organs pushed up under and between my ribs - it's funny. The baby (uterus) has pushed everything out of the way and the baby is taking up the whole lower half of my tummy.

I can tell the difference but I'm sure nobody else can. One day soon it's just going to pop out because there will be no room left.

I am sticking to my 20-25 lbs. I have worked hard to maintain a sexy body all my life. I am not quitting my efforts now. I have followed the guidelines my OB gave me exactly.

Lol I say this all the time, usually as a response to a comment like, "Wow, you got big!"

It's a baby, not a pizza!

I don't know why people make such a big thing over this...

I'm eating as I always have (normally... not for 2) and have been right on track.

Who knows where the extra weight comes from, but it's uneven: some times it looks like I gain nothing... other times it's 5 lbs in a week.

Relax.... the body does what it needs to do.
