Explain digital SLR to me!
I'm thinking about making this major purchase, but it seems like a lot of functionality many people dont use.
I used to take all my pictures with a film SLR good old fashioned Pentax K 1000- fully manual. Are f stop, manual focus, etc some of the features that people like better about a digital SLR? What other sorts of things would I need to know to make this worth the money.
Thanks!

Re: Explain digital SLR to me!
My number one reason for getting a digital SLR is the shutter delay is elminated.
Other than that depth of field with the zoom lens, etc are the other reasons.
f stop...well one day I plan to take a class on that one.

The shutter delay is one of my main reasons for upgrading. I can't tell you how many great shots I've missed with my point and shoot because of the delay. It's so frustrating!
I am in the market for a DSLR right now - but I still can't decide which one. It changes everyday from the D80 to the 40D to the XSi.

It's exactly what you said, it controls the depth of field.
Lack of shutter delay is a huge one, but I also like to be able to control my depth of field/aperture and shutter speed in a lot more detail than you can with a point and shoot.
The ability to use a bounce flash instad of on-camera flash, to change lenses. You can't do decent portraiture with the lens on a point and shoot. With that wide an angle the feature will be distorted, Te background has more depth wth an SLR. Look online you can probably find examples of the same picture taken with a wide angle lens and a normal lens.
You have the ability to change lenses so you can use a macro lens, or a wide angle lens, or a tele.
I don't think you can go from shooting an SLR to a point and shoot. There's just NO comparison IMO
The D40 is a GREAT camera and it's really not that expensive and it doesn't have all of the bells and whistles you'll never need
ETA: I want to add one thing about the D40 and the D60. They don't use the standard F series lenses, so if you have old cameras you want to use the lenses from, or if you plan to buy a professional lens, they are not for you. But if it's casual photography there are a few lenses to choose from.
