Exposure to Fifth's Disease
Amber was exposed to Fifth's Disease at daycare What should I expect, if anything? Should I keep her quarrantined? She was at my mother's this weekend; should I alert her to any possible exposures? (I have a PG cousin and my aunt is over quite regularly).

Re: Exposure to Fifth's Disease
I don't know much about it and not to frighten you, but if your PG cousin came in contact with her she needs to call her DR. I know that it has been known to cause complications in PG woman.

Re: Exposure to Fifth's Disease
They call it "slapped cheek" syndrome. She may get a fever and red rosy cheeks. It is a virus. It is very common but I would call your dr to double check. I dont think you necessarily have to quarantine her, I just wouldnt let her around other small children or pregnant woman. I tested positive for it when I was pregnant (why I have no idea I am not a school teacher) and they were very concerned about the possible side effects to DS while I was carrying him. They made me go for extra tests and scared the $hit out of me. Definetely tell your cousin to call the dr. if she is pregnant and was around DD.

Re: Exposure to Fifth's Disease
Hi.
I don't post very often but I do happen to be studying for my RN state boards and actually have this information right in front of me. This is what the textbook says:
Fifth's Disease (erythema infectiosum) Caused by infectious agent Human parvovirus 19. Transmission is by respiratory secretions and blood. The incubation period is 7-18 days. Clinical Manifestations: red rash on cheeks; gives face a "slapped cheeks" appearance; followed by "lace-like" rash on extremes that may fade and reappear.
Symptomatic treatment only; monitor for anemia.
For "prevention" it says "none".
Hope this helps!

' yes, she needs to see her doctor right away for a blood test. I was around someone with fifth's disease when I was pregnant and my doctor took blood to be on the safe side. It can cause complications during pregnancy.
