"Extra Learning" question
Does your DC school do extra learning in the mornings before school and what do they do? My school does it starting in K. The idea in theory sounds great. I've sent two of my kids before and both told me they either cleaned out their cubbies or played on the computer with a bunch of kids, no actual academic stuff, just busy work including the teacher.
I no longer will send any of my children if a notice comes home. If they need extra learning let me know what in, and I will address it at home.
So my question is... Is this just something teachers have to do as part of their contract or something?

Re: "Extra Learning" question
Never heard of it to be honest. The only extra learning I've seen is extra help time after school in middle and high school, and extra help for the standardized testing if the child is "at risk" (takes place before/after school).

Re: "Extra Learning" question
We have that. My youngest (he's in 1st grade) goes on Mondays for ELA and Tuesdays for Math. He goes in at 8:15am, school starts at 8:45am. On Mondays, he is with a reading teacher and Tuesday, with a math teacher. He does actual work. It's not one on one though. It's him and a few other kids.

Re: "Extra Learning" question
We only have that for standardized testing prep. High school offers some extra help after school, but that's it.

Re: "Extra Learning" question
I am a teacher and it is part of my contract that I need to hold extra help 2 times a week. It is strange that they did not do any work, I have never heard of anyone doing that. At times if I invite more than one and have to work with students one on one for a few minutes I will let them do something like a learning game to reinforce skills until I am ready for them but this is not typical.
