Eye exams

I need to order contacts and my ins. only covers every 2 years. I want to order a year supply but I have to pay out of my pocket this year. First I need an eye exam, how much do you pay for your eye exam?

One place I called said $100. Not sure if this is the norm or too much.

Thanks.

Re: Eye exams

I pay $40 at my doctor's office. I usually pay that part out of pocket too and use all my coverage towards my contacts.

Great! Could you tell me where your doctor is located?

Thanks.

Re: Eye exams

Do you have an astigmatism in both eyes?
If yes, thats why they told you $100...
and u will be hard pressed to find an eye doctor who will charge you less than that for the exam.

I worked for an optometrist & her pay scale was:
$49 - basic contacts
$79 - astigmatism in 1 eye
$110 - astigmatism in both eyes

sorry - i feel your pain. my exams run me $100 each year & the contacts themselves are $320/year supply...

interesting! When I questioned the $100, she just said that was their fee. She didn't mention astigmatism-which I don't think I have.

Thanks for that though!

Re: Eye exams

I went for an eye exam on Sat. It was $65 which I think it too much...so $100 is def. too much, IMO

ETA: I have astigmatism in both eyes. They never mentioned anything to me about the exam being that much due to that being factored in. Hmmm...interesting.

do u have your current contact boxes? if you have 3 numbers (ie -7.00 x +1.75 x 180) than you have an astigmatism.

I'm sure its possible that that eye dr charges 1 fee, and 1 fee only. If they can get away with it, im sure they will.

It's a shame that a doc would charge that much especially if you come prepared with your current Rx & they dont have to make any adjustments...

He's in Port Jeff Station. He's a GREAT doctor, my entire family uses him.

Re: Eye exams

I have coverage for my exams but I go out of network so I pay full price. I just went a couple of weeks ago and it was $105. I have an astigmatism in one eye.

I order contacts through visiondirect.com and I paid $160 for a year. One torice lense and one non toric.

Vision direct is associated with my insurance and I got a 10% discount for using them. My eye doctor wanted to charge me $240 for the same contacts!
