What does your OB regularly do for your exams?

I am writing this question as a follow-up to a post I put up a few days ago. My OB does sonos every single visit as routine, not b/c of any type of risk or anything. Other than blood pressure, urine sample, and weight, this has been my entire examination. (Not including cultures and blood tests).

What does your OB do when he/she examines you? Does he/she listen to your heart, look at your cervix, feel your abdomen, etc.? What is standard for each visit? I feel like there should be more to a routine examination than just the sonogram.

Urine sample, weight check, blood pressure check. Then Dr. comes in, listens to the baby's heart answer any questions I have and that's it.

I am a little jealous because I am 27 weeks and have had one sono in the beginning and had the ultra sound at 20 weeks...and that is all. I was told tonight they don't even do the growth sonoChat Icon

Oh and I was wondering whether he should be measuring my belly?

I see a midwife.

The first 30 minutes we talk about how I'm feeling, ways to relieve any of my symptoms etc and answer any questions I may have.

The she checks my blood pressure listens to my heart and lungs. Checks my legs and ankles for swelling. Feels around my belly and measures it (started measuring at 20 weeks). Then we listen to teh babys HB with the doppler and fetoscope.

After the check up we spend anothe 20-30 minutes talking about a PG related topic. Breastfeeding, cloth diapering, intimacy during Pg etc.

I love my appointments!Chat Icon

I am jealous. While i love seeing the little one, I am uncomfortable having so many sonograms. I know there has not been a proven risk at this point, but I don't feel right about it.

Me too, except my belly gets measured.

My dr does not believe in doing alot of sonos. I have only had two. She will not even do a growth sono unless medically necessary.

My midwife practice is composed of three midwifes that have an OB practice that they can refer patients to if they need to, say for higher risk pregnancys, c-sections etc.

They deliver babies in the hospital or at home. Midwives are Nurse practitioners with YEARS of experience delivering babies. They do not perform invasive procedures like ceseareans, they refer those to the OBs they work with.

God forbid I need a c-section and OB will perform it but my midwife will be with me the WHOLE time taking care of me and my baby.

As long as my pregnancy progresses normally with no complications I am having my baby at home with 3 midwives and 2 labor and delivery nurses in attendance.

Since my 24 week appointment, the doctor also measures my belly. At one of my recent appointments, one of the doctors also felt my belly and could tell where the head and buttocks were.

The doctor will also go over recent test results with me and will sometimes talk about what will happen at upcoming appointments.
