EZpass tracking speeders
I can't find this on snopes. Anyone know if this is true?
New York State started a pilot program upstate north of Albany on the Northway to catch speeders using the Easy Pass system. Recording devices were installed at intervals along the highway. Once an Easy Pass equipped vehicle passes, the device registers the account number and the time. Same is again registered at the next "check-point". Based upon the distance between the register points and the posted speed limit, the state is sending speeding tickets in the mail to the guilty persons.
Because every driver does not have Easy Pass, the State is "perplexed" as what to do to impose the system state-wide. The solution has been found. Soon all new vehicle registration stickers will have a metal strip or chip imbedded in same. This will take the place of the Easy Pass system as stated above. When a vehicle passes the registering device, the strip will relay all the information.
This is not fictional. New York State contracted with VERIZON to install the system. The system has already been installed and the entire Bronx River Parkway in Westchester County has been "wired" for when the new system begins. Once the State makes the new program public and advises all motorists of the potential for numerous speeding tickets, it will also reveal that the system has already been installed.
Another reason that will be given for the new system is to enable the authorities to track stolen vehicles, to trace kidnap victims, to monitor and trace suspected criminals and terrorists, etc.

Re: EZpass tracking speeders
I always wondered about what you posted. I'm not sure what's up with that instance. However I do know people that get tickets for going too fast thru the toll in EZPass lanes.

This is why I keep my EZPass in my center console between tolls...

Re: EZpass tracking speeders
I thought that they tried to do this in NJ, but it got shot down... or maybe it was something about using the EZPass logs in a court of law to prove someone was somewhere at a particular time.

Re: EZpass tracking speeders
It's true... I got a speeding ticket when I was driving on the thruway in upstate NY
It was ridiculous, they wanted to suspend my EZ-Pass for I think 3 months. I was still on my parents account at the time because it was right after I graduated from school. So if my EZ-pass was suspended, my parent's passes would have been too. I know my Mom sent a letter stating it was her daughter, blah blah blah and they let us off with a warning.
I don't know if it makes a difference now but I take my EZ-pass off the window now in between tolls.

Re: EZpass tracking speeders
This exact e-mail was discussed on a Snopes.com discussion forum. Here is what one poster said:
The "getting a ticket by going between the tolls booths too quickly" has been a rumour for ages.
Now what they might be confusing the issue with is the installation of a traffic tracking system that uses the EZPass transponders to determine the speed of the traffic for display on status boards.
And they gave a link to this Newsday article.
In the article (from October 10, 2007, so very recent), they talk about how the NY DOT partnered with EZ Pass to give info to drivers about travel times on the Northern State Parkway- they use info from cars with EZ-Pass to get up-to-date travel times.
According to the article, EZ-Pass info is never given to the NYS DOT so I doubt that law enforcement would have access to it.
DOT officials said the E-ZPass information is encrypted and deleted immediately after use. Individual information is never made available to the state Department of Transportation or law enforcement....Who has the lead foot? They'll never know. E-ZPass data used to determine drivers' average speed is encrypted, scrambled and deleted immediately after taking a traffic reading. So, state DOT officials say, the new travel sign system will not be used for law enforcement purposes - for instance, to catch speeders.

Wow that's crazy, was it for speeding between the tolls or when going through the tollbooth, because I know they'll give tickets for going too fast through the tollbooth but the article I read said they cannot give law enforcement info about your speed while driving along the highway. If that is true than the Newsday article I just quoted was lying.

Re: EZpass tracking speeders
I'm pretty sure I was tracked speeding through a toll booth, so the Newsday article is probably right.

Re: EZpass tracking speeders
I was thinking about this recently with the whole new system on the Northern State that averages time between point A and point B, based on how long it has taken previous drivers along the same route; and they figure this out by recording cars who use EZpass.
I was thinking that this is the next step, sending out speeding tickets to drivers who get from point A to point B quicker than they should.
I think that I am going to keep my EZpass in the bag that it comes in, so that the signal my EZPass sends out can not be read.

Re: EZpass tracking speeders
This system exists on the Pennsylvania Turnpike - but I haven't heard anything about it being instituted in New York. With the new "how long it takes to get from Point A to Point B system" that was recently installed I suspect it will only be a matter of time before its use gets expanded.

It's not speeding thru an EZPass article its a "your driving down the road between 2 points and you get to one quicker than you should and you get a ticket" article.

Re: EZpass tracking speeders
That's not fair. They should at least give you a window of some kind. All kinds of things can happen.
If I'm understanding correctly, it wouldn't matter where you have your ezpass between the tolls, it's tracking the amount of time that it took you to get from one toll to another.

Presuming Point A and Point B are tolls, it won't matter where the tag is when you are on the highway.
While I am not sure how I feel about the "big brother" aspect of a system like this. It would certainly deter reckless driving and result in less car accidents.

Not really. The reckless drivers probably won't be responsible and efficient enough to get an EZ-pass. They'll know that if they don't get one, whatever time they lose at the toll booth, they'll make up for on the highway....

Re: EZpass tracking speeders
I have to say I doubt the consitutionality of this.... becuase even if our registration stickers have a chip, not ALL cars (such as out of state cars) can be equally targeted.... so it unequally traps NYS cars over out of staters..... not to mention this registration chip means they are able to collect data on our driving patterns w/o a warrant, which also doesn't sound legal. Currently, we have to voluntarily use our EZ pass at a toll, and then have the option to return it to that sleeve so its not detectable.
I'm not a lawyer, but this doesn't pass my smell test.

Re: EZpass tracking speeders
I have been searching and can't find anything other than discussions about this, nothing from the state or DOT, wouldn't this type of thing have to be made public before they use it?
They have to put signs on highways that have speeding enforced by aircrafts, so I think this would be the same.
If it's on the Northway it definately doesn't have anything thing to do with distance between toll booths, because there are no tolls on the Northway. At Albany (the junction of I-87 and I-90) The NYS Thruway turns west and goes along I-90 and I-87 continues north as a free highway and is called the "Adirondack Northway"
Now I'm really curious and want to find an answer becuase I live along the Northway Cooridor in Saratoga County.
