I don't know how far away your mom lives, but I know that if my mom was having surgery, I would be there. I'm not saying this to be judgmental, just honest. I can't imagine either of my parents going through surgery and me not being there in the waiting room. I don't know what your situation is though.
If I couldn't be there, I would be calling my dad or sister frequently to get updates, and I would go to visit as soon as I could. I would also send flowers and/or balloons.

Re: Family that live out of town
DH's mom lives OOS and had surgery about 2 yrs ago. we spent our vacation driving there to be with her.
before that, she had a hysterectomy and DH went there alone, as did 1 of his brothers.
is there any way you can plan a last minute trip to see her? even if it's after the procedure.

Re: Family that live out of town
When my mom had serious and unexpected back surgery out of town, one sibling had been with her and two of us flew down to Dallas in shifts during part of her recovery. Fortunately, Mom had over 300,000 frequent flyer miles and we just took them so we could be with her. Would you believe she actually complained about it? Thats my Mom for ya!

she lives in florida. we're all taking turns going down to help them out. my aunt(her sister) will be there when she has the surgery. i know they'll keep calling us with updates. its a short surgery, but until i get the call, i guess i'll be on pins and needles

This would be me as well. If there was going to be a long recovery, my sister & I might take turns being with her but I couldn't really imagine us not being there.

I know, it's nerve-wracking waiting to hear news when it comes to things like this, whether you're far away, or in the hospital waiting room. Just keep your cell phone on you at all times. I hope that everything goes smoothly.

Re: Family that live out of town
My dad (lives OOS) had colon surgery after being diagnosed with colon cancer last year. I wasn't there for the surgery but called and talked to him everyday while he was in the hospital.
He was starting chemo about a month after the surgery and DD and I stayed with him when he got his port-a-cath and started the chemo. Dad told me that he was glad I came then. He was well taken care of in the hospital and at home, I took care of him. And he could spend more time with my DD, who was 4-mos old then.
ETA: Get well wishes to your mom!

Re: Family that live out of town
My parents live OOT & when my dad was put in the hospital last summer, my mom called me in the middle of the night & I got in my truck & drove 400 miles to Maine. I could not imagine not being there in case he needed some time of surgery. Once he was released from the hospital, I came home.

Re: Family that live out of town
I guess it all depends on the type of surgery. As long as my non surgery parent was there and some of my siblings then i would not be there. Especially since my family is 800 miles away. My family is very good about getting word out and fast. So that helped. I always feel we have to go with our gut feeling and use the telephone as often as you need.
