Fantasy series like Game of Thrones?
My DH is always and forever looking for a series akin to Game of Thrones. Other series he's enjoyed are Lord of the Rings, The Wheel of Time series, and the Legends of Shannara series. He's also read Hunger Games and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and enjoyed them, but not like Game of Thrones. Any recs, particularly series?
ETA: Goodreads has recommended these to me... any rants or raves about any of these titles?
The Name of the Wind (Kingkiller Chronicles #1) by Patrick Rothfuss
Wizard's First Rule (Sword of Truth #1) by Terry Goodkind
American Gods by Neil Gaiman
I see Dark Towers recommended quite a bit, too, but DH isn't a huge Stephen King fan. He started reading the Stand and quickly gave up on it.

Fantasy series like Game of Thrones?
My coworker really enjoyed Eragon (Inheritance, Book #1)
Fifteen-year-old Eragon believes that he is merely a poor farm boy—until his destiny as a Dragon Rider is revealed. Gifted with only an ancient sword, a loyal dragon, and sage advice from an old storyteller, Eragon is soon swept into a dangerous tapestry of magic, glory, and power. Now his choices could save—or destroy—the Empire.

Re: Fantasy series like Game of Thrones?
Thanks! I've actually read Eragon and enjoyed it, but the writing is a little juvenile for my DH. He's a bit of a book snob. It makes it tough since I find a lot of the newer books are "young adult" and really good but he won't even give them a shot. I had to twist his arm to read Hunger Games.

Re: Fantasy series like Game of Thrones?
Try the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson. He is the guy who took over the Wheel of Time series after Robert Jordan died.

Thanks guys! These are great!
Oooh I like the Mistborn series idea. DH actually mentioned he liked the new guy's writing style better than Robert Jordan's. Thanks again!

It's not exactly like Game of Thrones, but I really enjoyed the Robin Hobb series that starts with the Assassin's Apprentice. I can't remember the name of the series.

Re: Fantasy series like Game of Thrones?
did he read ALL of Shannara or just legends? what about Word and Void series? it's just as dark and more present-day.
i'd say check out the dragonrealm books by richard. a Knaak or the chronicles of amber books by roger zelazny.
also the many many dragonlance books are also a classic choice.
i find goodreads does not always recommend well for fantasy. they seem to think sci-fi is the same as fantasy, which always annoys me. for something closer to sci-fi, try the darkover books by marion zimmer bradley
and if you find anything like shannara he likes, fm me the titles! i love and adore terry brooks!

YES! I know what you mean about Goodreads. And he's not really into SciFi. I *think* he read all of Shannara, but I'll ask!
I did pick up the Mistborn series the first book, but he hasn't read it yet. He's been working a lot and still reading the next book in the Terry Brooks series.
ETA: THANK YOU, by the way! I'm going to make a shelf in my goodreads just for "Dan" books. lol!
ETA: Are you reading the Kelley Armstrong series? I just noticed on Goodreads! lol! Sorry for being a stalker! I was just wondering how you were liking it... it's one of my favorites but I know only ONE other person who read it!

are we friends on goodreads? if not we should be (then it's not stalking) lol
otherworld mysteriously showed up on my kindle one day (I suspect it was DH by he's not admitting to it.) i started reading and by book 2 realized i've read some of them before. Last time i got up to 5 i believe. i'm on 7 now- Jaime's book. I like the series, but hate the gaps in between. For instance, the last chapter in book 6 the twins are born. the very first chapter of book 7 they are 17 months! there are new relationships and i have no idea how they came to be. (marsden is now part of the Pack? i would have liked to read how that came to be) i will stick with it just because i can't help but like the characters. any other books of that kind you like? or chick lit? (or as DH calls them, the pink cover books) always looking for something new to read!

Haha yes, we're friends. I used to have a different LIF user name, but that's another story entirely. I know what you mean about the gaps- there have been times where I've checked her website two or three times to make sure I'm reading them in the right order. I think she puts out a lot of novellas, though I've only read one and that was by mistake, so that might fill in the gaps. Also, it MAY double back, if I'm remembering the series correctly. I think Hope has something to do with Marsden being in the pack and I'm not sure if you've gotten up to her stories yet. But it's been awhile since I've read these so I could be mistaken. I actually have to read the last two that came out. I kinda forgot about them.
I'll give pretty much anything a shot- I'm reading some chick lit right now, but I'm NOT enjoying it- Sushi for Beginners. I don't know, just can't get into it. Besides paranormal, I'm really into mysteries/thrillers- along the lines of Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and Gone Girl. I'm just starting to get into the sci-fi genre now, too, and I've been on a classics kick- The Time Machine, The Island of Dr. Moreau, Ender's Game, Hitchhiker's Guide, etc.

Re: Fantasy series like Game of Thrones?
If he likes epics, he should absolutely pick up The Name of the Wind. Only two books of the trilogy are out, and we'll probably wait another year or two for the next, but I"m looking foward to it.
It's been ages since I read Terry Goodkind, but I remember loving the books.
I picked up American Gods earlier this year and only made it 1/3 of the way through before I put it down. It started off promising, but got boring real quick. Very slow.
There's a book that agents were raving about recently on Twitter and I can't remember the name. It's an older book. Shoot. Tamarind, or something like that if you come across it. Tamarina? Tamari? Shoot.
