Except for the cost of living, I like living on LI. It's fairly free of natural disasters (earthquakes, tornadoes, and even hurricanes are few and far between, and not overly severe)
I like the fact that the terrain is fairly boring here. That means that anywhere I go for vacation is more interesting than where I live... 
I was in Hawaii (Kuaii) for a week for my HM, and at the end of the week, as we were driving, it was like ("Yup, there's that mountain again.... there's the stream again... etc) I don't want the beauty of my "ideal" place to just be mundane.

Right now I live in an area called "Fairlington" which is in arlington, VA.
I LOVE this area. It is beautiful, the neighborhood is all couples with children or dogs (everyone is always out walking their dog except us, lol...not ready for one yet).
We are 5 minutes to DC and 5 minutes to Old Town, VA which is a beautiful town on the water with tons of shops and restaurants.
If my family all lived here it would be perfect...we are trying to move to be closer to family but now I love it so much I get sad about leaving...

I used to live on Kauai for some time... there is nothing like it. It was absolutely gorgeous. A little slow for me though.
I would definitely move back to Northern California...hands down one of the most amazing places on earth.

I love where I live....I know I have probably said it before. Its probably to do with an emotional connection to the city more than anything else, its not beautiful, its not particularly anything, and some people might even think its an awful place, but I feel very close to my adopted hometown, and really, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else!
There are a few things I love, I have been here on and off since 1993, in 1996 the city centre was hit by an IRA bomb and the entire city centre was destroyed by it. Since 1997 this city has made a comeback like you wouldn't believe and Manchester has really stuck their middle finger at the IRA and made this bomb the best thing that ever happened to this town (I should say that no one was killed, although people were injured and many people lost their businesses etc)
So whats good about the city...well, its a cosmopolitan city with sooo many cultures living together, we have fantastic food, brilliant shopping, great nightlife, a good music scene and once you leave the city...we are surrounded by the beautiful English countryside, not a 20 minutes drive from my doorstep.
Okay, so I sound like the local tourist board (but after last nights visit by the Scots and the Russians, they might be hiding their heads in shame) but I do love it here, I find the people warm, the lifestyle good, and really, its a lovely place in its own way.

I grew up in Princeton, NJ and I absolutely loved it. It is an amazing college town, with tons of stores of every type, restaurants, movie theatres, etc. As a middle schooler/teenager we would spend every weekend walking around the town going to the movies or ice cream stores. It has beautiful natural scenery too, all about a 40 min train ride from NYC.

My sister and her family moved to Myrtle Beach, SC about a year and a half ago. I would definately move there in a heartbeat but family keeps us up here on Long Island.

I also loved living in Kent, CT. It's a more rural town, but it has a great Main Street and beautiful natural scenery. It is home to many celebrities trying to stay out of the spotlight (Kevin Bacon, etc.)

I haven't been to many places, but where I would LOVE to live would be San Diego or Cary, NC.
Cary is just gorgeous and looks like a great town to raise kids in. It's only 20 mins from Raleigh, it's one of the safest towns in the country and has everything you could possibly need but on a much smaller scale.
San Diego was just hands down amazing. THe thing that draws both DH and I to San Diego is that we love the west coast CA lifestyle. Everyone is always outdoors, active, very relaxed attitude and we actually had an easier time finding vegetarian restaurants/options than we do in NY... (well on LI, I should say!)
Ahhh I can dream!

We spent last summer on Kauai and I loved it. Slower paced, clean, beautiful, surrounded by nice people, close knit communities, warm climate, I would love to move there.

I used to live near Seattle and would move back in a heartbeat - or to Portland - really any city in the Pacific Northwest. It's clean, lush, progressive and gorgeous.

We lived in San Diego for a few years and we want to go back (retirement or maybe sooner?)...if it wasn't for babies - we would still be there.

I've been to Kauai & Maui and also San Diego. I think all three of these places are beautiful. I would love to wake up every morning in these beautiful areas. I wouldn't get bored of the sceenary at all. Kauai was just beautiful. We hope to go back soon.

I agree with the PP that I would love to live in San Diego or Cary. San Diego is just so beautiful, so much fun, gorgeous weather, That is my ideal place to live. Hopefully we can get out there one day !
Cary is awesome, it reminded me so much of a really nice town in NJ/NY area. It has everything and veryone was so nice there !! It didn't seem so southern or different from where we live, just safer, cleaner and friendlier people !!
My third place would be right outside Las Vegas. Vegas is probaby one of my favorite spots and I would live there in a second. Am not sure if it's great to raise a family there though. People think we are crazy when I say we want to move there !!

My MIL moved there in 2006 and I go down a few times a year! I love it, but I love NY. I am a Bronx-born girl but love living out here on LI.

if I could live anywhere and bring my family/friends w/ me, it'd be Helsinki! all of my family on my mom's side are there, Finland is such a beautiful country, and they really take care of their citizens.....healthcare is free, and maternity leave is 1 year from your job and 3 years paid assistance from the government. I wish we'd be able to go, but we have too many people we'd leave behind here (namely all of DH's family & my friends!!).

that's so awesome!!! I spent a few summers there as a kid, and I've been there 3 times as an adult. it's funny b/c you don't find many Finnish immigrants here (other than my mom lol) ........they stay in Finland b/c they love it there.

We are practically neighbors. We live in the Del Ray section of Alexandria. We love it here, but it would be nice to be closer to our families in NY.
